Re: hytdraulic steering( Sea Star) (Wheeler Lake)

When mine gets low, I can feel the gears in the steering column as I turn the wheel.

If the reservoir is low, to catch any fluid spilled I wrap shop rags or paper towels around the steering column and put something under it on the carpet - the fluid loosens the glue. Then I use a large syringe body (no needle or plunger) to flow in a little as a time, a teaspoon or so, while wiggling the steering wheel to prevent a bubble from forming at the filling hole, until I can just see fluid in the reservoir.

Play can also happen if an adjusting nut has gotten loose. On my Seastar, its a big plastic nut with an small loosening clamp on it, located on the drivers side on the stainless steel rod that goes through the engine's pivot tube.

    So many honey-dos . . . . . so little motivation

If you are getting play you didn't have before there is a leak. First place to check is the end caps on the steering ram.

And, simply adding fluid WILL NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. The system MUST be bled to remove AIR from the lines, helm and cylinder.

ALL lines and fittings should also be inspected for signs of leakage.

CYLINDER BUSHINGS should be inspected (especially those on the TILLER PLATE and TILLER BOLT) for WEAR. Do not continue to operate a worn cylinder, as it's UNSAFE.

When finished, the jam-nut on the Starboard Side should be adjusted to remove excess play.

NOTE: Fluid level in the helm should be checked/inspected AT LEAST MONTHLY.
