bushings in swivel bracket worn out

i have a 225 EFI that is showing signs of wear in the bushings in the swivel bracket. My question is how much of a job is it to pull the powerhead, lower unit and mid section in order to replace the bushings. Hiow difficult is it to remove and replace the bushings? I have never pulled a powerhead, but am not a novice to turning a wrench. I have replaced the reeds in this engine just ot give an idea.

Re: bushings in swivel bracket worn out (LaTriton)

It's definitely a JOB. However, if you have an engine hoist, lifting eye, AND AN OEM REPAIR MANUAL (to use as your guide), it's mostly "busy-work" (plan a good day's work, or maybe two- depending on your abilities).

I'd recommend replacing BOTH bushings, seals, thrust washer, etc.

While you have it apart, this would be a VERY good time to consider new engine mounts (you'll already have them loose or removed).

Yes sir, I have the lifting eye and manual. How much does the power head weigh? I will do this repair this winter when the fishing slows down and order the parts from you.
    Thanks

Great! Unless you are a cerrtified merc mechanic. I have rebuilt 4 wheeler top end, Ford inline 6 ring job and even a 57 willys jeep tranny rebuild. I am not sure about the weight of the powerhead and breaking removing the bushings. The manual doesn't go into much detail on those things.

don't know for sure but the whole engine weighs about 500# or so, most of the weight is on the power head so I'd guess around 300# +/- a bit.

I'm shade tree experienced as a mechanic and just finished doing more or less what you're considering, and I have far less experience than you.

The most tedious part of my task was removing the old gasket material. The most difficult was separating the adapter plate from the drive shaft housing, but I don't think you have to do that for what you're after.

If the EFI's access plate for the lower engine mounts is similar to an Opti's, don't be surprised if a screw holding a plate is frozen.

Re: bushings in swivel bracket worn out (taeheel2az)

I just did mine (new upper mount bolts and new bottom solid mounts). I also pulled the adaptor plate and drilled out my relief ports (3/8 ths bit & adaptor plate gasket). Pulling the powerhead was not hard at all. Everything moves out of the way nice an easy. THE damn scraping was the hard part. I used a razor scraper and changed the blade frequently. TAKE YOUR TIME...get it all! both on the adaptor plate and powerhead. To break the powerhead loose, I left pressure pulling up with the engine hoist, and went around with a dead blow nice and easy then...POP! She let go.

Gonna have to do this myself soon on a 2000 EFI, what's the parts cost on this..roughly, best guestimate.

Re: bushings in swivel bracket worn out (2100greenmonster)

Is it possible to just change out the lower bushing without removing the powerhead? Just to by some time until winter when fishing slows.

Re: bushings in swivel bracket worn out (2100greenmonster)

You're going to be utilizing the powerhead and adapter plate gaskets, both bushings, seals, and thrust washer. Mounts (should you chose to replace) are also a consideration.

It's "nearly" impossible to change only the lower bushing- especially without complete disassembly.

If you'd like to make a list of necessary components/pricing, see the following post for needed information:
