    COIL POLL

I would like to know how many Pro XS and XS motors in service is having coil failure..

At 103 participants (9/11/09), the failure rate was computed via "reasonably acceptable scientific calculations". The Highest, and one of the lowest (zero) figures were removed to account for errors.

    On the remaining 101 engines:

606 total coils. 88 Coils failed.

Estimated Failure Rate: 14.521% (15%), or approximately 1:6

If you've really had 10 fail... and more- you've got an external cause.

Coil wiring harness should be inspected for loose pins and/or damaged connectors, and the CPS (crankshaft position sensor) should be tested (resistance should be GREATER THAN 200 ohms).

    Re: COIL POLL (bassitup)

There are 5 different tests from "pin B" or "pin two".

Doesn't really matter- a bad coil is always repaired the same way- replace it. Just glad that they found it, and hopefully will have you up and running soon.

Do you know if they verified the harness plugs, pins, and tested the resistance on the crankshaft position sensor?

Do What ?????? Are you saying that you asked them to look at the Items Don mentioned and they refused to do so ????
If so you need to find a different shop to take it to...

    Re: COIL POLL (T Mike)

I'd need to have your serial number to confirm the availability on the ECM/PCM.

The coils should be available... if not under the A01 part number, under the T00 part number (same coil without a plug wire).

If uncomfortable with what you've been told.... there is a phone number in the back of your owner's manual, which you can call to confirm the situation.

I've probably got BOTH sitting on the shelf.... if your boat were here.

    Re: COIL POLL (Roddy)

Bass, I had a problem with coils, after the second the tech started checking different things, he finally came across a bad wire in the coil harness. It was like the wire manufacturer ran out of copper wire, stopped the machine and butted another wire up to the original and started the insulation machine again. I was about 1/2" from a plug and when he pulled the wires it came apart. He started getting intermittent readings with his tester which made him suspicious. It was like the wire had been cut without touching the insulation.

one coil and 2 drivers on my 250XS but I've had 4 proXS's come in this year with bad ones so far sensors checked out OK harness looked fine they just
didn't fire. swapped drivers but the problem follows the coil location on the DDT
    missfire test.

    Re: COIL POLL (Bullet20dc)

    Charlie:

Try an "auto self test- plugs OUT of cylinder head" next time around. Have a spark board connected to all six plug leads.

This "loads" the coils in the same fashion that would occur when the engine is running... and you'll often catch "intermittent" failures faster.

May need to repeat again after the coils are "hot".

Coil #4 not the number 4 cyl. 4 coils gone bad. I hope they come up with a fix, it gets old running in 4 and 5 footers with a dropped cyl. Can't wait for 2 to got bad a the same time, would it even run?
