How do I test the temp sensor

I have a 2001 Merc EFI 225 3.0L, I wanted to test the temp sensor on the head to make sure the alarm is functioning. How would I test this without heating up the motor? And also what temp. does the motor have to be to activate the light/alarm. I am getting enough water psi but just wanted to double check. I guess too anal but better safe than sorry....thanks

Obtain an OEM Service Manual for your engine. Specific tests are listed for the temp sensors (including charts to test various OTHER temp sensors).

Order it from Don or Rhonda, best way to learn about your engine. It has step by step instructions from basic maintenance to total rebuilds. Might be the smartest money you'll ever spend on your boat.

    +1

And another way to look at it.... yes, these manuals aren't "cheap".

However, they contain at least 75% of the information available to Dealership Service Techs.... and if it saves you just ONE HOUR'S labor.... you've essentially paid for the manual.

Very true, bought one when I bought my boat, worth it's weight in gold.
