09 225 pro xs, no power on take off

Here's the story. Last Aug took boat out and could not get boat to plane without extreme difficulty. When it would plane, could not achieve full speed. Dealer had a little trouble diagnosing because motor ran fine when they put the "ear muffs" on it. After a couple of days they figured it was a faulty fuel pump, not putting out enough psi, so they replaced it. I did not have boat in water again until May 21/11, same problem when first put boat in water, no power on take off. So we decided to fish close to dock for an hour and then I started it up and gave her a few revs and it was fine. So we determined that it must have been the winterization of the motor when they "fog" it. Took a little while to clear or burn off the "fogging" fluid. Anyway same problem when took it out today, no power on take off. Boat will get to 5000 rpms, and about 64 mph. On May 21 when it was running fine, or so it seemed, I could get 5500 rpm and about 70mph. Thoughts.....

I had the same symptoms on a 250 proxs, and it was a coil problem.

Spark test would be a good place to start- for field testing, a timing light (clipped to one plug wire at a time while watching for the light to flash) is a good method.

    Engine serial number?

engine serial number 1B705196. Don, has the coil issue been resolved?? Is there new coils that will stand the test of time??? Should I have all 6 coils replaced even if I have to pay for it???

    Kevin:

Get your engine in to your Authorized Mercury Dealer.

Spark on ALL SIX CYLINDERS should be checked- preferably via the Computer Diagnostic System (Auto Self-Test, PLUGS OUT OF CYLINDER HEAD, with spark tester attached).

In the event that an ignition coil has failed, HAVE YOUR DEALER REFERENCE SERVICE BULLETIN 2009-026.

That should provide a suitable solution to the problem.

UPDATE: Mercury dealer replaced all six coils under warranty. Recommended changing all six spark plugs as well, as they were a bit black. Spark plugs $22.00 each (canadian$$$). Mercury oil, 2 cycle premium plus, $51.19 (cdn $$) per gallon. Just thought I'd let my American friends know how much we pay up here for a VERY short season, we're still waiting for bass season to open. Anyway motor running great, I hope it now runs like Mercs I've had in the past. Thanks Don for your help.

Good catch..... Optimax/DFI oil is indeed the correct oil for your ProXS Optimax engine.

    Re: (EuropeanAM)

I wasn't aware of that recent change. I just poured all the premium plus down the kitchen sink, wife not to happy. I'll start buying the dfi/optimax oil when
I run out of premium plus. Thanks for catching that!!!
