HELP GUYS 2006 Merc 250XS

I'm looking at 2006Merc XS......my first question is it says optimax on the cowling I'm not familiar with mercury motors but i thought XS an Optimax were two different motors that mercury made...my second question is i need any input on these motors......if guys have been having problems with them or there pretty bullet proof.......always use to be a evinrude guy but after so many lower units its time for a change..............any info on this motor would be appreciated.......I'm Torin between two different motors....

Both engines are Optimax engines.

The XS series engine is a Racing Designed, HIGH-PERFORMANCE model. Although the general appearance under the cowling is very similar, there are substanial differences.

That engine is a well-proven design.... and a strong performer (average propshaft horsepower near 268hp).

As with ANYTHING used... get it checked, including AT LEAST a compression test, gearcase check, PRINTOUTS of the Run History and Freeze Frame (Fault) History via the Computer Diagnostic System, review of maintenance history and needs, and of course: a Test run on the water to confirm proper operation.
