    Seasoning grill grates?

I have a nice grill and smoker but can't keep the grates seasoned. I still get rust on them and have tried several methods. What do I need to do to keep the grates clean and fresh???

What are the grates made of? If they are cast, slather them in Crisco and get them up to around 500 degrees. Seasoning is basically tiny chunks of carbon filling in the pores in the metal. You've got to burn the hell out of the oil, either by cranking the grill temp up or putting them in a fire.

I seasoned my Holland Grill's grate by covering it with bacon then cooking the heck out of it. I think it's stainless and is more of an expanded metal than the grates with straight rods welded together.
