By the way, fantastic shots of the people and city. Very nice.

Paul, I'm not on my home computer now, but that was a 7 shot HDR in order to properly expose the skyline and smooth out the water.

All I did in post was add a touch of sharpening, then clipped out the sky since it was blurred from the duration of the shutter, and threw in a properly exposed 5 second shot of just the clouds.

Excuse my ignorance but I am not familiar with this. I think I read something about this briefly somwhere but could you just give a basic idea of what it is and how to do it. Is it something you do or is it just a setting and the camera takes care of it?

    It's not hard at all.

All you do is take 7 shots, adjusting the exposure with each shot, then take all 7 shots, and blend them together in post processing.

I started out with the first shot at -3 exposure (basically everything was black except for the lights. Then just went up the chain -2,-1, properly exposed, +1,+2,+3

Obviously a good tripod is a must since any movement at all would result in a blurry mess.

As you can see, it smoothed out the water (obviously the buildings don't move), but I didn't want the clouds blurred.

So I clipped out the sky from the 7 shot blend, and replaced it with the one properly exposed shot.

I may sound a little difficult, but's it actually quite simple.

I see. Doesn't sound bad at all. I can't quit staring at it. It is truly an amazing shot. Thanks for the info. I guess it is finally time to break down and buy Photoshop

and do you have a high res of the one you are explaining to Paul? that needs to go into my desktop backgrounds folder.

also, just for grins, what are the exposure params for the properly exposed shot?

    Re: (pickupman66)

For sure, just give me a shout.

I'll email you a semi high res version, can't email a full size file (too big).

    Exif data:

    Shutter: 15 seconds
    Aperture: f/16
    Metering: center weighted
Exposure Compensation : -.3 (I do that with all my photos)
    Focal length: 24mm
    ISO: 160

It should also be known that I was shooting through a 3 stop ND filter.

I shot a few through a 10 stop ND(think welding mask) which required 4-5 minute exposures, but I kept getting a line of haze/fog off the water......would've been sweet if not for that.
