    Mercury 225efi terrible fuel usage

My new to me Mercury 225efi is getting terrible MPG.
Mtr is on a 98 Champion 202 mtr powerhead is new only about 40hrs.

I had a 2.5 200efi Merc, and i new it would be a little worse but this is terrible.
I dont know the exact mile but i used over a 50 gallons of fuel in two days of fishing and i cruised at 4000-4500 rpms most of the time.

After a day or two i had some fuel/oil leak from the front of the cowling, it leaked out a spot the size of a nickel.

i think i have an injector stuck open or a bad fuel pump.

Im needin some info on this to get the milage better.

I imagine that motor is pretty thirsty in general. I have a Champ 202 and I used to have a 200 Evinrude and it sucked gas like crazy. I recently switched to a 250 XS and hardly use any fuel compared to what I used to use. Does your boat have the 41 gallon tank?

I can run 50 gallons through my 225 efi in about 7 hours. But it's still a lot better then the GT 175 I had before.

Consumption on this engine WILL BE HEAVY. Great motors- but as you've found, they're thirsty in comparison to today's more efficient engines.

As for the nickel-sized spot: you need to make a careful inspection under the cowling to find the source. If you absolutely cannot locate the leak.... clean all suspect areas well with detergent or degreaser, and dry completely (preferably overnight).

Spray down suspect areas with "Lotrimin Athlete's Foot Spray". This leaves a white powder on the surface.... run the engine for a short period of time, and the leak should be readily apparent.

Wash off powder after repairing/addressing the leak and again dry the engine well.

Check all the small bleed lines. They tend to break or come off alot. They will cause that type leak
