Voltage regulator

So anybody had a volatage regulator go out and cause a fire? How about a stator? The reason I ask is because I had a small electrical fire on the 'Toon yesterday and am not sure what caused it.

I am thinking that when I saw Danny gettting towed last week that some of the contimanated water splashed up on my Merc and caused a short circuit, resulting in me about crapping my pants yesterday.

I had the voltage regulator go out on my 96 Mariner. Had to replace both and the wiring harness..........only time I ever broke out the fire extinguisher......

A buddy of mine's 96 model 200 efi's voltage regulator caught fire while on the river a couple of years back.
