Whats the differnce between the Torque Master and Verado Style Lower Units

A friend of mine just got a new Merc and he said is has the new Torque Master lower unit. The engine is a 250 and the guy is a Merc dealer so he must know what he is talking about. I have a 2010 225 Pro XS and my engine has the verado style lower unit. I am wondering what the difference is between these two?

DON will get you straight with the SPecifics, but the gyst of it is:
the TM has a little flange on the trailing edge of the skeg that is designed so that on your performance boats, the "lil flange/torque tab" keeps your motor straight and will keep you from "BLOWING OUT"...

The Verado-style case is a well-built, solid design. It's SLIGHTLY longer than the Torquemaster, has a VERY solid propshaft and gearset, and is well suited to heavier boats with a top speed BELOW 80 MPH (I prefer it for boats that will reach less than 78 MPH). It is also designed to be run at "standard" mounting heights (where extra engine elevation is not required). The Verado style cases DOES NOT have a cast-in torque tab, and utilizes a standard, Flo-Thru Torq hub kit. It can be easily identified by looking at the leading edge of the gearcase.... if you look at the leading-edge line, starting at the top and running down, there is a 1/4" jut "forward" in the leading edge.

The Torquemaster is a race-designed gearcase, which includes a cast-in torque tab on the starboard side of the skeg (trailing edge). It's well-suited for boats traveling up to 85 MPH, and requiring slightly elevated mounting heights. A heavy-duty 19-spline, 1-1/4" propshaft is utilized, and requires the use of the larger "fat-shaft" racing hub kit.

The 225 & 250 ProXS engines are now available in TWO DIFFERENT models, one has the Verado-Style gearcase, the other has the Torquemaster.

Yes, it did. There was a point (mid-'09 to mid-10 production) where the Verado case was the only available option on the ProXS.

There are now separate model numbers denoting "Torquemaster" or "Verado-Style" gearcase equipped (changed within the last couple of months).

Torquemaster is far superior IMHO over 70 mph as it has better lift and does not have the gearcase crabbing effect that the verado can have at these speeds
