ecu retarding the timing? don, would you clarify.

i just saw in a thread that a feller said that a 2001 225 efi should be prop'd to max rpm of 5700 and no more or the ecu would start to retard the timing resulting in loss of hp.
my '99 225 efi is running a max of 59k and some change ( runnin pre mix ) and its screaming! i cant tell that there is anything but pure push goin on under the cowl.
is this something that mercury started doin in later models or is this guy misinformed. or is my motor doin it too?
im not tryin to make the guy look dumb i just would like to know for my own curiosity.

There are dozens of models of the 225 EFI (with different calibrations in the ECU's, and on some earlier models, different tuners/adapter plates, etc.).

In general, the information is accurate, although to specifically apply it to a particular engine MUCH more detail is needed.

We must keep in mind that analog tachometers are RARELY ACCURATE.... so ANY RPM STATED must be taken with a "grain of salt" until verified with a KNOWN ACCURATE tachometer (preferably a digital inductive tach).

It sounds as though your engine is happy, healthy, and screaming. Don't mess with success.
