I have a 2004 250 XS and my brother has a 2006 250 XS and I find his is much quieter than mine...What is it that makes the newer ones quieter ? I noticed the airbox above the plenum has no filter of any sort ... Is it supposed to ? The reason I ask is because my dealers mechanic told me to change my air filter but I don,t think mine has, or ever had one...
the sound difference is perfectly normal..............2005 and back sounded much throatier

No air filter on EITHER engine.
There were some changes to both the engine AND the air attenuator between these years/models. Your '04 will definitely be louder.... but it will also run "neck and neck" with the '06 (while running less RPM's).

I was thinking sewing machine....but I can hear the electric fillet knife.
thanks.... Will the air attenuator off a 2006 or newer fit on my 2004 ? Yes my 2004 is as powerful, but, a bit tricky to prop with the 5850 limiter...
