    Merc Pro xb 250

Are these great motors? I may put one on a Gambler. what price can I expect to pay for one in good shape? Is the mileage really as bad as people say? I have a 225 Pro XS now and wonder how it compares in power. I know it is much better on gas due to the OPTI technology. I am guessing that the Pro XB is more powerful. How much more is the question......

Re: Merc Pro xb 250 (GamblerSam)

The 225 Pro XS puts out near 247 hp.
The 250 XB has been said to put out 270 hp.

For the 3-5 mph that you will gain with the 250 XB, I do not think it's worth the fuel mpg lose, plus the XB has to be run on 92 octane.

If you are looking to fish the 225 Pro XS is the way to go.

If you are looking to race and mod a motor the XB is the way to go.

PS. I would like to have first shot at your 2005 225 Pro XS if you put it up for sale.

PSS. There's a 2009 Merc 250 Pro XS in the motor for sale boards that IS PRICED RIGHT. (myredrangerz21)

    +1

I'll add that you can expect to use as much as TWICE the fuel in the XB (especially if you're heavy on the hotfoot).

Got to agree with the above, once i get it set-up like i want, it wont be as bad but right now i am running it hard everything time i go to see what the adjustment's have done. If you like to ride around the lake or pull tubes the xb is not the motor you want. I usally dont run much, put in close to where i'm going to fish so it will work for me. I do like the power and the way it handles the boat. Before i bought mine i was told you could watch the fuel gauge drop at WOT and they were telling the truth. It does keep fresh fuel in the tank!!.

May use a bunch of fuel but is one of the most reliable motors merc has made--feed it good premium fuel, lube it with Merc P+, cool it, and run it--- it loves it and the Sound----to get that on other motors will take some work and bucks. Mine may die next time i run it but it has been a great trouble free motor----

i must say i was worried about the fuel mileage when i first got mine, but it really has not been as bad as i thought or heard. don't get me wrong , it does like fuel , and i normally run at least a 100 miles or so during a tournament , but it is not breaking me to do so. very strong motor , i do not get outrun by anyone else unless it is a bullet or allison, etc. i love mine!!!!!

Re: Merc Pro xb 250 (ccole)

I can't find them on the Mercury website. I have a 300 pro max, I think it is what was before the XB, but could be wrong. It only runs on 93 octane and yes it drinks gas. When do think Merc will come out with a 350 2 stroke, I need one to push my 223 Mt. Home Champ. I would like to check out the 300 XB but cant find it. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Merc Pro xb 250 (scott m)

The XB and ProMax models are no longer available.... replaced by the XS or ProXS engine series (which are EPA emissions complaint).

As for a 350 Optimax.... who knows? The suggestion HAS been made.....

There is currently a Mercury Racing 350 SCI Verado in the lineup.

You would be amaised by the fuel savings with the Pro XS or XS motors.
Have you ever heard a XS or Pro XS at 6000-6200 RPMs? It has a sound all of its own.

Like I said earlier: fishing boat XS or Pro XS
racing boat and mods. the XB is what you want.

First hand fuel usage with both motors on the same hull.
2005 Gambler Intimidator 2000 DC hull weight 1600 lbs.
Lake Champlain round trip from Plattsberg to South Bay 200 miles

    2001 Merc 225 EFI TRO4-27 5800-6000 RPMs 72 gals. of fuel

    2008 Merc 225 Pro XS TRO4-27 5700-5900 RPMS 49 gals. of fuel

77-79 MPH GPS with full tour load- two guys, full wells, and fuel.

I would have to re fuel at the South end of Champlain with the EFI to make it back to Plattsberg with the EFI.
I can and have made that run without re fueling with the Pro XS.

I have made this trip at least 10 times.
