    Problem with 300xs need help

Ok last week after about a 2 mile run at 50 I idled around for a few minutes. Motor did not want to shift out of gear. Noticed while in gear the motor had a weird sound. Hard to explain but kind of a a grinding groaning sorta sound. When I went to take how the engine jerks and will not take off. The Smartcraft goes off and I get a system fault. #210 and 135. It says excessive engine speed. possible cause trim angle or prop. I took it to the shop and dealer ran a check with computer. Everything checked out. Took it on the lake with it hooked up and ran it nothing.. Did complete system check again and nothing. Ran it for about 30 minutes and it never did it again. Brought it back home and took it out tonight. Ran it short distance fished and went to take off repeated the problem. Motor will not come out of gear unless you cut it off. This time I cut it off and restarted then it ran again. Got back to ramp and it started the noise and vibration again and then the horn goes off. Any ideas

    Look for "Neutral Overspeed Faults".

Sounds like a potentially "failed shift position switch". If the switch is reporting the position as "in neutral" when you're actually in gear, the PCM will enact Engine Guardian as you attempt to accelerate.

The same switch can cause difficulty shifting out of gear.

Two common causes of shift switch failure:

-Overtightened cable attaching nut (the washer should be able to spin beneath the nut)

-Over-lubrication of shift slide (grease causing switch to hang).

Is that the same thing that is on the left side of the motor that can break . Dealer says he checked that and it was good

That's where it's at. However.... it's entirely possible that the problem with the switch is "intermittent" (your results on the water actually indicate an intermittent problem).

If you can get a printout of the Freeze Frame (Fault) History.... I'll be glad to review it and tell you what I think.....

Ok will talk to him in the am. When he hooked it to the DDT the only they it showed was a Over speed fault and a over heat compressor 30 hours before. Motor has 65 hours on it now

The over speed fault would be what I would look at.

NEED MORE DETAIL OF WHAT WAS GOING ON AT THE TIME OF THE OVER SPEED FAULT.

If you get a copy of the freeze frame, I'm sure Don would take a look at the data to help you out.

If you don't mind.... be sure to report back with your results "Either Way".

Ok we replaced the part yesterday and ran it for some time so at this point I would say it is fixed. The switch has a little button on the end of it when you push it in it did not come back out all the way. Also it was kind of worn on the end

    Glad to hear it!

Make certain that you've verified the two above (previously mentioned) items are correct (so as not to repeat the scenario in the future).
