To foil or not to foil?

Was thinking about getting a foil for my rig, 21XRD w/250xs, but was wondering if anyone looses speed on top end because of the spray manipulation? I know the Bryan's Foil is cut away but was curious. I am leaning toward the Bryan's Foil as it seems to be the deal. I am looking at reducing porpising as it tends to make a mess with a bait tank!! Also, will it void my warranty if I drill the plate?

Why would your boat porpose? Mine don't no matter what... Do you have the jackplate up too high?

I can only slow to about 25-28 mph then it starts until I drop down..........I can deal with it but if a foil will significantly reduce it and not hinder speed, I'm all for it

Mine does not porpoise unless you slow way down with it trimmed up some then it will , when you slow down you need to tuck er in.....

The foil will for sure help to keep it up and also help trememdously with holeshot.

negative...........it's trimmed all the way down

I was asking about the loss of top end speed deal because I come from old school 280's on some hot rod Laser hulls and the length that the factory foil has toward the back can even change top end............or so I've been told by some of the guys racing them back in the day because they would shave them off..........

mine has a foil and its the composite type, we trimmed the foil so it adds about 4" to the cav plat but stops about 3" from the rear end of cav plate. the foil starts about mid gear case (T/M) and my boat will stay flat to 19ish and then falls to plowing at 17ish but still up running. I do have the light weight batteries (Excide 34's (2) troller and 1 wet cell for cranking) the foil didn't hamper the topend. I mainly done it for the "setdown"

What is the difference between our boats? I can run 17 mph on plane w/o any hint of porposing and we run the same prop.

Trust me, Jeremy has a much larger head than me...

Just seems weird that my boat runs both slower on plane and faster on top.

    I have a 12 in plate.

Your Props have a bit more angle dust on them.

Re: To foil or not to foil? (Fear-This)

Like Mike said you shouldn't have any porpoising on a 21,unless yor still trimmed up.The foil will not hinder your top end speed and it will help you get out the hole.Low speeds will decrease also.
Mike maybe yours runs at lower speeds cause of the hvy.'r layup you have..Don't know that answer. But it is weird

As for as warranty it won't void it.I've had a few guys call Mercury and they said as long as you don't modify the gear case your ok..Talk with your local dealer to see what he says.
