Bullet Question

I think I found Bullet for sale that I like. When did they go all composite (no wood), or are they all composite? (not starting anything I just really don't know) The boat I'm looking at is a 98' 21XD. Any good or bad info on this year and model is appreciated.

They still use Balsa core in the bottom. But, there is nothing made that is stronger as far as strength to weight ratio is concerned and thats why they still use a Balsa core. Transome and all other parts are composite.

Bullet still uses all wood.. Trandsom, stringers and core!! They do now have all composite as an option when buying new boat..

I will post tonight when I have more time what to look for in the boat for bad areas..

I have a 1998 21XD and there is wood in the transom, dry and solid as a rock.

There is really no model year to "avoid" with a Bullet. It really depends on how well the owner took care of the boat. You're not going to see any problem with a Bullet of any kind that has been treated fairly well. The wood in the transom is not a problem because of the laminates that Bullet uses - unless it's been treated badly. One way to tell is pick up on the motor from the capitvation plate and bounce it up and down. If the transom flexes - you've got problems. If it's solid, you're good to go. Also, be sure to climb under the boat and make sure the pad/running surface is in good shape - and be sure to check under the bunks if you can! those trailer bunks can hide some BAD damage! You're going to see some normal wear and tear where the cooler lid is where the passenger in the boat stepped on it up and down getting off the back deck. That's the only place on our 21XD I've seen anything that resembles a stress crack. I know there are a few more places that Lou will chime in with, but these are usually normal wear and tear on a boat.

I had a 98 as welll and no problems. As Bood said unless it was mistreated you will not see many issues other that cosmetic stuff

If the boat your looking at is a 1998 model it is all wood. The first all composite Bullet made was just last year. There is nothing wrong with a boat with wood as long as it is cared for by the owner.

Ditto: I hava a 1986 19' that is still in great shape! I still love it, everytime I go fishing I cannot believe how well it has held up. First attempt at posting a photo, so who knows? [IMG][/IMG]

I totaly agree about the wood lasting a life time as long as it isn't abused!! The most abuse comes from leaving a boat out in the elements and leaving in the plug!! Have seen first hand what a neglectful owner and a boat full of water can become!!

Basically, if ya look in the bilge area everything sould look smooth with black jell and white drips, if there are boating articles such as life jackets, rope or anything else, remove and inspect areas real good.. Poke and feel everything, it should all be solid..

Lift up the driver and passenger seats and pull out the plastic storage bins, look at the stringers in this area.. Should be black with the white drips also, feel the wood and tap on it listening for a solid sound..

Bullet does a superb job putting these boats together and they will last forever if taken care of properly and treated well!!!!

Lou and I have something in common, do exactly as he says and be sure to take the handle end of a screw driver are something simular and tap on the transom it should sound very hard with NO !!! hollow spots as well as the stringers like Lou said, OH and the aluminum trim on top of the trans. if their are screws their instead of rivets BEWARE !!! water will go where nothing else will and screws only mean that the rivets have loosened an been replaced with SCREWS !!!! more than that I would own nothing else, Bullets are GREAT BOATS.......unless the Old Man would ever change them dam clam shell consoles on the Stroker and offer a single console...

i have the very same one..its 1988 though..still solid as a rock..i love it..but the wife says when te stratos gets done the bullet has to go..sure gonna hate to part with her...the wife i mean

I HEAR YOU! There is something genetically wrong with women if they cannot undestand a back up boat, good thing you have the Stratos for that! Good looking old Bullet, if you decide to sell it I have a friend who will take it. He's been after mine for years. Have a great weekend.
