If this is an analog tachometer- check the wiring connections at the tach. Make sure they're clean and tight (a loss of voltage or ground will make the tach jump wildly).
If there's an adjustment pot on the back of the tach, OBSERVE THE SETTING. With a small, flat-blade screwdriver, move the adjuster ONE OR TWO postions, then return it to the original position.
See if problem is gone.....
