What is the difference ? Do they still make the 250xs in the racing division like the 300xs ? I know the xs engines were built to run 6300 rpms and run 92 octane gas, is this still the case?

The primary difference between the 250XS, 250 SportXS, and the 250 ProXS are the gearcase options.
250 ProXS: Verado Style (Production) Gearcase
250XS: Torquemaster Gearcase
250 SportXS: Sportmaster Gearcase
All three utilize an identical powerhead. All utilize 87 octane fuel.
There are also warranty differences (Racing engines carry shorter warranty periods).![]()
There are additional models of the 250XS and 250 SportXS available with various midsection and trim system configurations (primarily for offshore use).

The 2003 and 2004 250 xs had the low rev limit of 5850 and required premium minimum 91 octane fuel. The 2005 250 xs had the 6300 rev limit but still required the 91 octane. The 2006 and newer 250 pro xs have both the 6300 rev limit and the regular 87 octane fuel requirement...![]()

Recommended Maximum RPM and "Rev Limit Setpoint" are two different things.![]()
The recommended RPM range is indeed 5500-6000 RPM.
