    Oil

First let me say I don't buy into the hype of manufacture specific oil as being the "only option". I do understand that most OEM oils exceed the TC-W3 certifications required to meet most outboard manufactures warranties and recommendations. With that said from the research I have done the TC-W3 standards are pretty stringent and any oil that meets that standard should be more then adequate to protect your engine.

I am not a fan of yamalube with the high amount of moly and carbons it produces and the requirement to run ring free in every tank. I understand moly is for wear protection but think it could be overkill and a little bit of a marketing strategy..

I ran Super Tech from Wal-Mart in my old Mariner and it was a clean burning oil and never gave me any problems. In my newer HPDI I try to run penzoil when I can get it but have ran the super tech from time to time also.

What are your opinions on oil and how often do you run additives such as sea foam, stabil etc? I run Stabil at every other fill up and so far have had no issues with carbon.

    Re: Oil (Skeet22)

I run cheap oil (Super Tech or some chit), Stabil every tank and decarb once per year. I started using the Stabil after I had ethanol gum up my carbs a couple yrs ago. Other than that, no problems on my 10 yr old carbed motor.

    Re: Oil (Skeet22)

Dean, i have run Quick Silver for over 12 yrs in my last 3 boats and Seafoam for the last 8 yrs and marine Stabil for the last 2-3yrs. The reason for QS is its no bad on price and you can find it almost anywhere, so never a problem if you need it.

I have never used Yamalube, but know a few that have and they stopped using it cause of fouling plugs. They use QS and Pensoil from what i can remember.I used SuperTech oil in my alum boat for about 6 yrs and never a problem.

I have been running Penzoil synthetic blend for about 3 years now with no complaints. I add startron in every tank and seafoam in every other tank

I use Yamalube and ring free... the only time I use stabil is when I can't get to the Connoco for ethanol free gas.

Supertech for me too with no problems.....I used to use academys citgo that is the same price as supertech, but supertech burned cleaner for me. Been running supertech for 5+yrs with no problem..shined my light through my plug holes the other day and my cylinder heads looked good, for what I could tell

I blew a Mercury 115 years ago. The mechanic told me it was from using cheap oil. I was using Texaco at the time. He said some oil doesn't burn clean enough and leaves a lot of soot behind. It get into the ring grooves and leads to fing failure. I use Pennzoil Premium Plus now. Watch for the sale at Academy and buy 3 or 4 gallons at a time.

Yamalube is the worst for that due to the very high amount of additives used. It is the dirtiest burning oil out there but has the most protection agents in it. Guess its a trade off but I rather not deal with it.

I haven't been using Stabil in my tanks. Do y'all use it every tank? How much do y'all use(ratio). And I alway use Mer premium, but I'm going to an Opti so from what I hear you are only supposed to use Opti oil.

In my optimax, all i've burned is the Mercury/Quicksilver synthetic blend. Yeah, it's more expensive than the others, but i get it at Academy with my ole lady's discount, or Gulf Coast Boats where they have it at a great price.

I have an 04 200 Oti and I use QS-DFI ONLY. About 2 years ago I switched to premium plus and blew the Air Compressor. The reason I switched was due to the high cost of the DFI OIL but the Compressos cost me a whole lot more!

Shoot ToledoFreak an im, he can give you the actual price. I'm not positive. Seems like it was $27 or just a little more a gallon. Now this was late spring/early summer.

The only thing that I have run in my Yamaha's has been Yamalube and lots of Seafoam. Then I added Stabil to the mix for the corn fuel.

    Re: Oil (reelman)

No I have a 4 stroke...whole new wonderful but 3mph slower I like ball game.
I can change the oil ONCE a year BY MYSELF and use MOBIL 1 20-50...
a no-brainer for future rigs IMHO...

BUT when I had my two salty ZX200s I used Yammy oil the 1st year then went Wally/SeaFoam...no issues...
