    Yamaha vs. Mercury

I have narrowed it down to a Yamaha 4 stroke F250 BTXR which weighs 609 LBS
    OR
a Mercury 2 stroke 250 Pro XS that weighs 505 LBS.

The boat is a Champion 22 Bay Champ and is rated for a 250. Would you be concerned about the 600 LB motor?

The Mercury would be more expensive since I would have to put new controls in the boat because it is already rigged for Yamaha.

The word from the dealers 2 weeks ago the new 25" shaft Yamaha F250 XCA 4.2 liter engine would be out in 10-15 days. Now it is going to be mid June so I am not going to wait for that.

    Which way would you go?

    Thanks

Because of the weight or engine preference?

If only the SHO had been out for a year or so i would say that, but you are probably also looking for a long shaft as well.

If you go Yamaha you can get 6 yrs warranty, not sure bout the Merc. Price and warranty would be my biggest concern..

I'd go for the hammer if you will be in saltwater most of the time.

Yes the 25" shaft is the one that hasn't hit the market yet. Merc has 5 years as of May 1st. You not concerned about the 600 LB engine?

Having the coast guard cracking down on two stroke engines, being your going new I'd go with the 4 stroke. Don't want to spend that kind of money and get bothered with a two stroke. JMHO.

I talked to a guy with the coast guard and you have to get a coast guard sticker now for your boat. It's not being enforced right now but will be in the near future. The new regs state that you can be fined should your motor leave an oil sheen on the water. He said right now they would be writing warnings but would eventually right tickets with fines and federal fines are expensive. This all came about with the establishment of the office of homeland security. As I understand it, the coast guard is now responsible for all navigable waters other than land locked lakes.

4 stroke on a bay boat and the weight won't matter.
