    250xs bad news

Well I have finally found out what the problem was with my 250xs. #6 cylinder is scored. I post a question on 1/8/10 about cylinder overheat and found a dealer who would help me. Went there this morning. Computer found no faults. Pressures were air 108 and fuel 94. Compression check revealed all 110 except #6 which was 95. Pulled head and there it was. Scored.
This motor had shut down last fall in very cold water after about 1/4 mile. Was warmed appropriately prior to take off. Motor restarted with knock and miss. Eventually it shut down again with no alarm. It eventually cleared itself and knock went away. 164 hours. Now I found out. Not too happy but what are ya going to do.

Now what do I do. Its an '04 with no warranty. What is best option. I don't have prices yet but here is what I was told as ballpark.

They can send block out to be re-sleeved with new piston on #6. Doesn't appear any other damage than scoring. Approx $5000-$6000

Get new block pistons from merc $!0,000.

Get new motor and sell off the parts.

    Anybody with any advise?

The prices you've been given on a "rebuild" are realistic, if a sleeve is being replaced, and the engine COMPELTELY gone through.

However, the replacement powerhead price might be a little high.... if you were to shop around (or you were willing to travel), you could probably do better.

We might have some other options to offer you, depending on what gearcase you're currently running... feel free to drop me an email (or give me a call).

Don: if whatever you have going on with him doesn't work out I think I got a guy who has the shop to take care of a quality resleeve for him and knows "a little bit" about real high performance 3+ L motors

Have him PM me if it doesn't work out with you guys

Will do! I sent him an email with several different "options"... we'll see what happens.

Probably one or two of those options you sent him are on my list as well
