High pitched whistling coming from 225 Pro XS

Everything seems fine, as it runs fast and sounds clean with the exception of a high pitch "whistle" at over 5000 rpms. Should I be worried or have it checked? Running a Gambler intimidator. Adding that it is a 2005 ProXS 225.

My 225 opti does the same thing and I was told by my local marine it is normal thats the airpump that i hear. I've been running with the wistle for a year now and so far so good. It's not real high pitched but if I listen for it I can hear it

First, let me say that I never say "don't worry about a noise", unless I've heard the noise, and have ALL of the information.

How long have you had this engine on your boat? Has this "whistle" always been present, or is it a "new" development?

Fished out of a Ranger with a Yamaha this past weekend and it was doing the same thing. I have never heard a noise like that from my Merc.

I bought the motor new in 2005 and it gets a service and check every Spring. Has always had some noise but I have to turn my head and listen for it at WOT. Boat runs upper 70's so it doesn't seem to be a power issue.......idles fine, no noises at lower operating rpms

Would be interesting to know if the "whistle" is the same, worse, or "gone" with the cowling off....

That's a good idea! Just be very careful when taking off, or when coming off plane to try and avoid "backwash" into the cowling (which could easily quelch the "whistle".... or any other noises the engine makes, for that matter).
