My 200HP E-TEC died on me today

First of all this is not a troll. My model number is E200DPLSOC and the serial number is 05100080. I am the original owner and I only have 22 hours on the motor.

Secondly I am not trying to bash Evinrude or BRP, I am just trying to get some input from the pros as to how severe the problem could be and what I need to do to make sure I get the motor fixed properly and promptly.

After launching my boat this afternoon, I idled past the no wake zone, took off and was running 4500 RPM for about a minute when the motor started making a weird tapping noise then started loosing power. I knew something wasn’t right so I slowed down and before I could put her in neutral, she just died. I tried to restart but the motor acted like the battery was dead and wouldn’t turn over. Fortunately a friend of mine was fishing in the area and so I called him to come give me a tow back to the ramp.

After 10 minutes of waiting, I tried to crank the motor again and she did start but ran real rough like it was missing on one cylinder. Just to be safe, I shut her down and waited on my friend. After getting the boat on the trailer, I pulled the cowling and I didn’t see anything loose or abnormal but I am no marine technician.

Based on my symptoms, any idea what it could be? Also, other than taking her to the dealer tomorrow, anything else I need to do to make sure the motor get repaired properly?

BTW, my friend has a Tracker Pro Team 175 with a 60 HP Merc 4 stroke, he had a hard time trying to tow my heavy 190FS but got a kick out of the fact that a Tracker had to tow a Triton, I am sure I will never hear the end of it.

FF, Hope it's nothing major. One of the Rude Gods should be able to consult with you shortly. Keep us posted.

No expert, but this one doesn't sound good. When it died, were you getting any warning lights/horns? The fact that you tried to restart it and it acted like the battery was dead makes me think one or more of the cylinders was frozen up (had gotten so hot that it expanded and locked in place). After you let it sit and it cooled down slightly, it retracted in size which allowed you to restart the motor.

No matter what, it needs to get to the dealer to find out what's going on. BRP will have you back on the water in no time.

Oh I forgot to post that I did not have any warning horns go off at all and my water pressure was fine.

Re: My 200HP E-TEC died on me today (bugman)

How come when there is a post about a major problem with an ETEC it disappears? Makes it look like a cover up when that happens whether it is or not. Bomb surely doesn't expect everyone to believe their motors don't blow up. All motors blow, just a matter of when. Every time there is a problem listed about the ETEC you better include your model, serial #, name, social security #, mothers maiden name and place of birth or your a troll. Come on guys, lighten up a little, it looks bad from my view for someone to be on the defensive so much about a product. Nothings perfect and people know it. If you think its a troll, just tell them to produce a name to check the warranty claim with. Then if it is fine and if it isn't tell everyone its a troll. Just like the guy above, it makes people wonder whats going on when posts about problems disappear, makes it look like Bomb is trying to hide something. Bomb is a great company and is gaining more and more respect every day, but no motor is perfect.

Re: My 200HP E-TEC died on me today (chad201proxl)

Chad, when someone posts their information the post stays. When they don't, it goes. It's that simple. Their are people that do not want to see the E-Tec succede. When it is the person's first post, it is a negative post, and you ask for information and you do not get a response, it's hard to think otherwise. Are the E-Tec's going to have problems? Sure. But, not as many as the competition wants.

Also, this board has no ties to BRP. So it shouldn't look like they are trying to hide anything. This board simply tries to post the truth and help people out with REAL problems and not continually put out fires that are started by people looking for trouble.

If all of the 'troll' posts stayed up, there would be so many rumors and questions that have no basis that this board would never be able to help the people that were really looking for information.

You are correct about posting all of the information about your motor when you have a problem. BRP has such a great network between its dealers that one dealer can look at what has been done to a motor and may have an idea that could help out. It's not just to make sure you have a valid concern, but more so to help correct the problem. But, I don't think they actually need the mother's maiden name.

Re: My 200HP E-TEC died on me today (1niceStratos)

Good post Jason. It's too easy for guys to register and then come on and say that their eTec died. The one post that Seahorse locked, the guy doesn't even give his name. I had posted asking him to provide a name but he didn't. Had to be a troll.

All anyone has to do is provide the serial number, etc., and they will get all kinds of help. If not, they won't.

Re: My 200HP E-TEC died on me today (1niceStratos)

Bugman and Chad, this is my first post regarding this issue; the post that got pulled was not mine and must have been posted by someone else.

I have been using this site for a year now and I have seen a lot E-TEC bashing and like 1niceStratos said, there are a lot of people that want to see E-TEC's fail, I am not one of those people. I have never seen Rusty63 and SeaHorse pull a legitimate post and IMHO the best way to prove that my post is legit is to post as much information as I can making it easy for our moderators to distinguish between the people that are seriously looking for help and those that just want to start a bunch of crap.

Re: My 200HP E-TEC died on me today (Al from Canada)

Well I see your point when you put it like that. I didn't realize there are people out there that just want to make a product look bad. Man, they need to get a life. It just seems to me it would be better to leave the post up and just post that they would not produce a name and or serial number and that its a troll rather than just delete it. I can just see how some people would get suspicious of that. I guess the mothers maiden name probably is a little too much info.

Do you ever find out who the trolls are and what their exact motives are? Just wondering if they work for other outboard companies?

Re: My 200HP E-TEC died on me today (chad201proxl)

I would think that at times they may work for other outboard companies......you'll find this going on in many sites.....you could have a site where people write in a say how they like cameras for example and some of the negative posts aren't legit at all.....just the competition trying to make other brands look bad.

Might work better to just lock posts that aren't legit, like Seahorse locked the other one.......then after a few days just take them down to reduce the clutter.

There are some that come in trying to "Stir the pot". But I will say, If you ever meet John or Fred you will not find any better of 2 guys that truly go out of there way to help everyone they can. Now Seahorse is like the "Great Oz", a knowledge base of info, BUT NO ONE can see what is behind the curtain You can get better help here from these mods than alot of dealers around here for sure.

Hope it's nothing major with your E

Re: My 200HP E-TEC died on me today (chad201proxl)

Not always, but there have been employees of competitor's companies that have posted on this board. Sometimes they may be looking for valid information. Other times they have posted things that were not acceptable.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. All motor companies have their good and bad. I for one will NEVER talk bad about another manufacturer, but I will brag about mine all day long and tell you why I like it. I prefer Fords, but I'm not about to tell Al that his Mango Dodge is junk (if I did, I'd never make it to be a moderator one day ).

No post is going to be deleted from this site that contains valid information whether good or bad as long as it can be verified. There are several posts on here about issues that people have had with their E-tecs. Those post are still on here so people can learn from them in case they run into the same problems.

Re: My 200HP E-TEC died on me today (fish finder)

    Fish finder,

Thanks for posting the model and serial number. That goes a long ways toward credibility, unlike a recent post from someone with no info whatsoever, plus it was their first post here.

I'm sure the dealer will do a good job checking it out and the factory will do a super job in getting the problem resolved, if it is a motor malfunction.

One thing to keep in mind with the E-TEC engines is that if air gets into the fuel system or lack of fuel due to a restriction happens, the injectors will make a "god-awful" clatter that sounds like the motor is coming apart.

Check over your fuel system carefully for any loose clamps, kinked lines, partially closed fuel selector valves, loose filters, etc.

Well I dropped off my boat this afternoon right as the dealer was closing up. The tech told me that he would go ahead and pull the boat inside and look at it first thing in the morning. I will keep you guys posted....

Re: My 200HP E-TEC died on me today (fish finder)

Sounds identical to what happened to my 225 E-Tec HO two weeks ago. Mine died while idling, shortly later started making a loud tapping noise. Come to find that the engine was blown, #2 cylinder came apart. I have npt gotten word from anyone from BRP on what the cause of failure was, although I expect that they would probably not disclose the facts anyway.
