Hey Jeremy or other gps guros

Ok... I have used gps in a boat for speed readings only over the years I just bought a Globalmap 3000MT. I had no idea there was so many differnt types of software for these things. I know nothing about making a map, or anything. Here are my questions:

    1. What software package should I get on eBay? (Im not paying $100+ to LEI)
    2. What do I need to mark some waypoints in the lakes I fish? Like bruchpiles, ect. I fish several different lakes and I would like if all possible to have a map of the layout. Like the main lake, bayous, ect. This may be standard stuff, I dunno. I would like to be able to see the lake on the unit as im going, then I can stop and maybe mark something??
    3. The unit I bought has two card slots, and it says on the website mmc/sd up to 512mb. Now I assume these are the standard cards like i use in my camera, ect. Do I need one for every lake? or how do i go about doing all this...?

Dont worry Im not asking for free gos lessons Im reading tons of stuff now. I just figured you guys could point me in the right direction so i will know what I need. I have downloaded the emulator and a GDM? Trying to figure that one out

Thanks guys, and if any of you need ya boat worked on just hollar, I do know that stuff

Re: Hey Jeremy or other gps guros (SwatDawg)

I don't know anything about GPS's.......... Here it goes.

    1. I'm going on the assumption that you fish locally around your area and not the big lakes, TB, etc. For staying local to your area, Map Create is what you would want. I see it's an older unit,so before you buy Map Create or any mapping card, contact Lowrance to find out what version will work with it. Basically MC is the next step above the internal map that comes on the unit. The unit can not hold MC on the internal memory cause of size so therefore you have to buy it.

    2. To mark waypoints all you have to do is push the button on the unit. It will store the waypoints on the internal memory of the unit. When you get Map Create, you will be able to make a map from it and save to a SD card that will then be put in the card slot. Turn unit on and it will show up. Now, what you will be seeing on the map will only be an outline of the lake, river, bayou, etc. There will be NO contours, creek channels, buoys, etc. associated with that map. That's just how it is. When you mark something, your icon will pop up on the screen and stay there until it is remove.

    3. For the SD cards, yes, the same thing you use in your camera. I personally don't see a need for anything bigger than 512. Plus being an older unit, might not be able to read anything bigger. Now, say you get MC, and make a map on one card, you will insert that map card into one slot and the other slot you can put your blank sd card into it. For the blank one you can save your waypoints, trails to it and store on your computer for backup purposes in case something ever happens to the unit. You do not need a card for every lake. When making a card with map create, you can encompass the whole state and put on one card.

    4. Play with the emulator, it's a great tool to practice and learn. Now for GDM, it's a free version of Map Create, but is not worth a shit cause you don't have outlines of lakes and such. If you get MC, you will need to uninstall GDM for MC to run. Also with MC, you can manage your trails and waypoints, other words, rename, change symbol, etc.

Now, I'm not cheap, that was about $50 worth of info. Just don't ask Ricky how to use it cause he will have you going in circles.

Hope this isn't to much to read. Need anything else, give he a shout on here, email, etc., I'll help however i can.

Ok, Looks like $50 will buy MC on eBay. I checked Lowrance and it will work with the newest version, 7. I looked at fishing hotspots and of corse none of my favorite lakes, other than Bruin was on it I guess i will have to make my own lake maps.

In fact, i had MC v6 and then figured i didn't need it anymore and sold it a good while back. The map i use in both of my units is from MC. Now i do use the Navionics when i go to Toledo Bend.
