    05 225 OPTI TEMP QUESTION ????

Was running the boat this weekend, pulled up to a spot, made 9 casts, then switched the key to start the engine and the alarm went off. As I watched the smartcraft gauge, it noted a temp alarm then switched to a bar graph showing a bar about 5/8 to 3/4 hot and a temp of 168 degrees. I went ahead and started the engine and once the water pump started peein it cooled off immediately to around 117 degrees......its the only time it ever happened. Do ya'll think this is anything to be concerned about or just a freak accurance??

    thanks

Sounds like you were a victim of "heat sink", where the motor temps will climb dramatically when shut-down. A minor "over-temp" occurs, then quickly subsides when the motor is started and the cooling water does it's trick. If allowed to "cool" a few moments longer, you may have never noticed it was an issue..........

You should allow a minute or so after WOT to allow the cooling process to continue.

    +1

Of course, if you have NOT replaced your water pump, and inspected or replaced your thermostats in the last year- NOW is the time.

You can minimize this occurance by three simple practices:

    1. Allow engine to idle for 60 seconds after a "run". This allows an opportunity for engine temps to "stabilize".

    2. Trim engine "down" prior to attempting to start. It's critical that water intakes are below the surface before starting.

    3. "Crank" engine within 5 seconds of turning the key on. If the key is left on for longer than 5 seconds... it can lead to an "immediate" triggering of an overheat fault when restarted (such as turned key on, remembered you needed to stray down your poles, came back and started engine= overheat warning).
