    Brands of oils?

I have always used Mercury oils (gearcase and 2 stroke) and am wondering about the possibility of using something else. Cost is a factor and improved performance.
Mercury or Yamaha surely don't make their own oil. They are labeling it themselves but it is probably made by some oil company to their specs. Mercury will recomend their oil because they want to sell it, but something else is probably just as good or even better. Thoughts? Opinions? Facts?

I'm a true believer in if it ain't broke don't fix it attitude. I would keep using what your motor calls for just for peace of mind. why take a gamble on it when brand "b" can be made up of different compounds, viscosity, burn off etc. to save a couple of bucks ? maybe in a pinch I would use brand "b" but not on a regular basis. everybody has thier opinions and that is mine.

I buy my MERC Premium Plus oil in bulk and save some money doing it that way. Most dealers have a drum of oil and will fill your jugs at a discount.

    Chad
I've been running Penz full synthetic in my 98 2.5 200efi for the last 5-6 years. The reasons I choose it out of the masses of oil was Jay over on the 2.5 board he'd seen good results out of it and their blend . The other reason for me was availabilty my merc dealer closed and I wanted to find some locally.
Now with the lower unit I had a near miss last year. Last year I put in some Citgo lower unit lube instead of merc hi performance. After about 2 hours I was getting a squeak in neutral. Sounded like gym shoes on the floor. Got back to the campground and when I drained it. It had broken down and looked/ ran like black coffee. Bad batch of oil, actually couldn't hold up who knows.
I've tried different lower unit fluids through the years trying to squeeze out a few more R's and for me the merc hi perf works the best I get less fuzzies on the drain screw and it shift easier.

I might try Pennzoil synthetic, but I aint gonna put anything that Chaves produces in anything I own! My business owns 4 18 wheelers and I have used Mystic in them for years. It is a very good oil, but it is made by Citco. After Hugo Chaves slapped the US in the face I had to go to something different!
Is the Mercury Premium Plus the best oil? Mabye there is something better?
Price isn't the only issue. It is just like in a Honda 4-wheeler. Honda says use Honda oil. Honda doesn't make oil they make 4-wheelers. They buy oil from some big oil company and put their name on it.

Chad if you do a search on the web for MSDS info on the oils it will tell you who bottles it.

Chad if you follow this link to the MSDS for Mercury Premium Plus you will see on page 9 of 9 that Citgo makes it for Mercury.

You are right! Mercury Marine is supporting Hugo Chaves! I think i am going to give the Pennzoil a try.
