    Out of gas

1st post so bear with me, I've got a 02 250proxs on a 02 Bullet 21xd. Yesterday we were running boat WOT for about 5min and then idled for about 30sec then back to WOT for about 3min. The motor ran out of gas. I switched over to the wrong saddle tank and pumped the bulb and could hear it pumping air out of the wrong saddle tank. I then switched over to the correct saddle tank and the boat cranked up and ran maybe 300yds and was acting like it ran out of gas again and died. Now you can crank it in nutreal with a ruogh idle and when you try and give some gas an alarm will sound and motor will shut off. Now it will only idle for around 4sec and die. Any prognosis for this?

Water in fuel. Change the filter and dump the water seperator and see if that makes a diffrence.

Okay, forgot to tell everone that I don't know much about boat motors so where is the filter and seperator on the 250? Thanks for the response. I keep the boat under a cover and the gas has benn in that tank for 3 months. do you think this is one cause for water in the gas?

Be glad to point you to the fuel filter!

Can you point us to the "correct engine model"?

Preferably serial number, year and horsepower?

Incidentally, there was NO 250 ProXS in 2002.

Red cap on top of IVST (integrated vapor separator tank) is indeed the fuel filter.

BTW... refer to your engine as a 250 XS if it's a 2004. ProXS wasn't available until 2006.

Not being a smart a## but, I found out that a Service Manual was a very good investment. PS: It has all kind of diagrams.

There is a "U-hose" attached to the bottom of the IVST. There are TWO chambers that need to be drained- the filter housing in the front, and the pump housing in the rear.

Disconnect the hose from the rear, and look for the bleeder screw that faces "forward" at the bottom of the filter housing. Back the screw out (with the filter off), and bleed the contents into a glass jar.

Tighten the bleeder screw down "carefully" until "snug". DO NOT overtightened.

Reconnect hose to the rear fitting, remove hose from front fitting, and drain the rear chamber by loosening the bleeder screw that faces the rear (preferably into the glass jar). Snug the rear bleeder screw down, reinstall the filter.

Don't forget to pump the primer bulb "firm" before attempting to restart the engine.

    Re: Out of gas (EuropeanAM)

any suggestion on what steps to take on the water in the line from the valve switch to the motor and what do I need to put in the main tank as far as additives go. I 'm going to drain the saddle tank. once again I keep it under a cover outside and this may happen again what can I put in the main tank to help this issue. Once again thanks for all the help and I will buy a service manual for the (250xs 04 model)

Don, do you have the fuel filter and service manual in stock for a o4 250xs? you guys are just down the road from us. The local marine did not have a filter or a manual in stock. I did purchase some merc dri fuel and quickcleen to pour in the main tank with fresh gas.

    Filter: Yes
Manual: Would need to order one for you.

Be glad to let you take a quick look at ours (or give you necessary pointers to replace filter).

    Re: Out of gas (bassdad+2)

Don, I may be jumping the gun a little so let me know. I did everything you said and we have not taken the boat to the lake yet but the smartcraft is showing a alarm bell with the engine at the bottom. I know nothing about this so I went to smartcraft website and it said that it meant engine trouble. Is this something I should get looked at before I head to the lake to see if the water is out of the gas. we pumped the line dry from the valve to the motor, drained the filter housing and whatever the back half was called and put some Quickleen fuel dry and stabil in the main tank with some fresh 93octane.

    Re: Out of gas (bassdad+2)

I would strongly suggest that you have the engine placed on the Computer Diagnostic System to determine WHAT the fault is.

The only thing I can think of "off the cuff" would be:

Check to ensure that you didn't disconnect (or leave improperly connected) the harness for the TPS, or it's arm (while removing the fuel filter).

Sure do.... several sets, as a matter of fact.
