As far as I know, the ProXS motors have always used 87 octane. I believe you may be thinking of the 250XB.

I think the 250 xs came out of the racing group sometime around 03. When they first came out they had to have 92 octane. They also came with 1 year warranty and you could buy one more for a total of 2 years. Then they went to regular production and 87 octane with 3+2 for the warranty. I am just not sure when they changed.
I believe the 2006 year model was the first to run 87 octane, but Don can clarify.
Here's the scoop (as best I recall):
250 XS (Racing Version): Came out in 2003, and used HIGH TEST fuel through the 2005. 2006-> now use 87 Octane.
250 ProXS (Production Version): Came out in 2006, and has ALWAYS used 87 octane fuel. Longer (production) warranty period (currently 3 years), and up to 4 (four) more years of Mercury Product Protection is available (if purchased during the first year of ownership, or with an additional fee, through the period of the Factory Warranty Period).![]()
