    How high is to high

How do you tell if your motor is to high? With the water pickups on the nose cone will the water pressure drop like it would if you didn't have them? I am needing more rpms but don't want to get my motor to high and hear the dreadful sound.
    Thanks
    David

Re: How high is to high (haleconst)

If you've got a Torquemaster Gearcase (that's what your engine came with).....

Watch your water pressure! You can continue raising the engine in 1/4" increments until ONE of the following occurs:

    1. RPM INCREASE WITH A SPEED DECREASE
    2. WATER PRESSURE DROPS BELOW 18-20 PSI.

If either happens... drop the engine back down 1/4" and that's your "max running height".

Don, I am assuming that Mercury replaced it with what was orginal. Right now it is 3" below the pad, I am turning 5570 rpms and have 26 psi (smart craft). Thanks for the help.

    David:

You've DEFINITELY got room to move your engine up some.

Target your RPM's closer to the 5800-5900 RPM range... and try to keep your water pressure at 20 psi (this leaves a little bit of a safety margin for turns, or rough-water operation).

Raised the engine in 1/4 increments until I lost speed, dropped 1/4. Not sure what my measurment is, but I'm running a 25 water pressure. Running 58-59 hundred rpm. can you raise the engina and initally lose some speed but pick it back up at a higher motor setting but a lower pressure?

I can explain it to you but I can\'t understand it for you

    Re: (dandy82)

Unlikely. Once you start to lose speed (and gain RPM's), you've probably exceeded your "best slip ratio".
