2003 225 efi???? Nightmare on Melissa

I'm hear to tell ya deals on e-bay are not always deals. Bought a 2003 225 efi and when it arrived the troubles began. Installed on my 206 champion and took to my local marine to finsih the rigging and make sure all was working correctly.
So far so good. Took to the lake and new prop to large or motor didn't have enough power to put her on plane. Went and exchanged 25p for a 23p and on the way stopped to pick up some new plugs(in case they were fould) and was talking to the merc guy and suggest we hook it up to the computor and see what it said.
First, engine had 300 hrs more than what was advertised, 2nd motor was in gaurdian and 3rd, this is the best part the serial number on the lower part of the motor was not there and the sticker on the engine was for a 99 optimax 225 long shaft. Now heres the question. How can you determine what the engine truly is. The merc service guy says that he'll be able to let me know after its torn down???
Did I mention that the number 4 cylinder hung a piston ring....
If any of you know how to Identify the engine that would really help..

I'd be filling a grievance with e-bay and paypal on the guy if you paid for it that way and I'd be getting my money back.

there should be a feeze plug on the drivers side of the motor with the serial number stamped in it. that should get you started.

Thanks, I'll look for it when I go by the shop. I'm sure the shop knows to look but at this point trust is a issue. Unfortunatly the guy would not take paypal so I don't have a way through them. I'll wait until the report comes back from the engine shop an go from there.

MAN.... I'm really sorry to hear of your problems!

Unfortunately, there are some con artists out there....

From the sounds of it, you'll be best off to have it torn down and determine WHAT you actually have. No doubt... from what you've stated, there's been a "combination of parts from some different engines" involved.

If the injector rails are on the head it's an opti but if they are in the plenum it's an efi motor. Also an opti has a compressor on the port side near the head were the efi doesn't.

Its an EFI 225. I talked to the motor shop yesterday and he had looked for the number on the freeze plug but there was not one. At the machinest now, he let me know soon about what its going to take.
    Thanks,
