    Hours on Opti

I have a 99' 225 Opti with around 540 hours on it. Just wondering how many hours most of you get out of a merc. I like to keep everything maintained, is there anything I can do to get the longest use out of my motor? Possibly rebuild eventually? Or any parts that I should look into replacing?
The only thing to my knowledge that has ever been replaced is the air compressor and starter (and plugs of course)

Water pump and filters.... should be on your "annual service list".

Perhaps belt and/or tensioner... a compression test (or even better- a leakdown test) is a good measure of the health of the engine.

Maintain it properly, feed it good fuel and oil, allow it to warm up properly (and idle to allow temps to stabilize before shutdown)... and you should see plenty more hours out of her!

Good deal. I probably need to put new filters on there. I've always ran good gas and DFI oil through it. I've noticed lately it keeps wanting to die right after start up or when I shift into gear, there any reasons for this?

Numerous possibilities.... but in any case, the "diagnostic flow chart" begins with checking the basics- Compression, Spark, and Fuel Quality, Fuel Flow, and Fuel Pressure (on your Opti, this includes Air Pressure).

Proper Service, INCLUDING CLEAN, FRESH, PROPERLY GAPPED SPARK PLUGS.

Then.... continue with further diagnosis (if needed).
