Used 250 ProXS vs 2005 300X

My brother's looking into buying a Bullet or a Stroker. We got into a discussion related to Motors. Could anyone please give us some honest non bias input between the 2 motors besides the HP difference. Speed is not a great concern. I'm sure he'll go over 80mph with either motor. I know general maintenence will be a major factor. But as far as the major differences between the two, reliability, fuel consumption, overall performance, and any common problems you've seen with each motor would be greatly appreciated. It's a big investment. It'll help to get it right the first time. Thx in advance!

I have not had a 300x,but i have a 250xs on my 20xdc bullet.the idle is smooth, the fuel economy is awesome, all around a great runner.before the 250,i had a 99 225 promax and you could not compare the idle quality, fuel consumption,or overall running quality.you should know that i purchased the 250 because i could not find a 300x,i would have taken the speed over the running quality, truth be known.if you can run both.good luck

Some love the 250XS for fuel milage but WOT is WOT!! The use gas to make power

Do you fish T that have a hp limit?? Also will you be able to get insurance with the 300X on the back??

It was VERY hard down here a coule yrs ago with some of the big names dropping me due to the fact they thought they knew the boat was capable of running over their speed cap

The obvious power difference aside....

The 300X is an EFI product- certainly not a BAD product by any means, but it will certainly be "good friends" with nearby "fuel filling stations".

The 250 ProXS is an Optimax Product- Direct Injected Technology product. Strictly, and simply due to the fact that fuel delivery into the combustion chamber is "timed" to occur only after the exhaust ports are covered- there is a 33% minimum improvement in fuel economy over the CARB or EFI models.

Back when the EFI engines were still in production, a common "sales" technique was to place two identical "horespower" models "side by side"- one an EFI, one an Optimax. Back in 2002... if you did this with, let's say a 225 Optimax, and a 225 EFI- disconnected and plugged the fuel supply line, and then cranked both engines and allowed them to idle:

1. The EFI model would be DOA within 5 minutes or so.
2. The Optimax would still be running 20 minutes after the EFI had shut down!

Of course... this was great for Optimax sales....

Thx for all the replys!!! He will not be fishing any BASS or FLW TX's, so Speed cap and HP cap wont be an issue. The main issue would be reliability, gas consumption, and overall performance. He just doesnt want to purchase then have to stick more $$$ into it. I dont think hes planning on trying to break 90MPH, with that said, it seems like the DFI would be a better decision. Thx again for your replys!!!!

dont worry, the 250 will get good fuel economy and break 90 on a 20ft bullet or stroker hull.I can not speak for the 21ft bullet, but I have owned the other two.good luck and have fun.

The 300XS would be a good choice, great gas mileage but runs on prem gas. Sure does run good on a Stroker. 94mph at 4350 ft elevation.

Re: Used 250 ProXS vs 2005 300X (Strokerdean)

Once again if your gonna get a 300 of any kind ck with your insurance agent and be sure they say they will insure it no mater what.. Usually an add on to an exsisting policy is easy to sneak in. But down here I had a hell of a time getting a new policy on a ne Stroker with my 300X on the back..

He will be fine with a 250XS and it will go faster then he want, he should really have a sportmaster with 1.62 gears though fo get the most out of topend

Just make sure that if you go with the 300... you know the DIFFERENCE between the 300X and the 300XS

300X is an EFI product, while the 300XS is an Optimax Product. BIG difference in fuel consumption.

Lou is giving you great advise, I checked and double checked with my ins agent, he verified it with their underwriter to make sure there were no problems. I was also very honest with the speed these boats achieve and what I expected to run. I had no problem out here, but Lou fought it for months.

Like Dean and Lou stated, I double checked with my insurance company before buying and had no issues. I have state farm.

As for which motor, I'm a huge 300X fan. Had mine for a couple of years with around 300hrs, and no issues. Minnesota boat with short seasons, but I still run the hell out of it every chance I get. The motor is an absolute beast. It puts a smile on my face every time I turn the key. It’s a piece of Mercury history.

Hey Dean. I sent you an IM last night after I figured out who you were as well. It's funny I had seen a few of you post's but it never clicked. I hope business is well. Your machine was one of my favorite installs. Probably because we spent so much time talking boats. I kept in touch with Herman for a while after words as well. I have always regretted not taking you up on your offer to hit the lake. Now that you are sporting a Stroker with a 300xs I will have to try and find a way to make it back out.
