Couple of ??s for don and any suggestions

Hey Don its Lil Red again. Model # 0G644050 I have one of the frankenstein motors that you love so much. I sent you pics a while ago and your reply was:

From what I can tell, it appears that you have a later-style EFI 200 block assembly, on which all the earlier electronics and fuel system were installed (from the original engine).

    1. I have been reading a couple different places about what grade of fuel to use in summer/winter so I was wondering what type for my 200 efi?
I have been running 93 octane w/ ethanol, and always quicksilver premium plus with a Don cocktail.

    2. Can I do the 3 liter cowl mod to my 200 efi? will it help at all? or will it hurt? Also can I or should I do the clam shell under neath?

Is there any other easy/ cheaper mods I should look at that will help the performance/extend the life of my motor.

Thanks for the replies and yes I know its a little ole 2.5 and this is the 3.0 board but Don has helped me since I got this boat and this board seems alot more active/informative. Thanks in advance

    1. Really need a current COMPRESSION TEST (with results) to comment on fuel requirements. NORMALLY, unless compression is exceeding 135 psi, there is NO NEED to run high-octane fuel.

    2. Cowling mod shouldn't be a problem, with (or without) clamshell. It's only opening a cleaner air pathway... some feel it makes an improvement.

    1. Awesome thanks Don I read your in depth of how to do a compression test actually around the same time I posted my question and we did one pretty close to like you said when I bought the boat. The numbers then were around the 110's, but I am interested to do it again the RIGHT way and check it out again just for my own purposes.

    2. And cowling mod is gonna get done soon, ace hardware here I come!!!!!!!!

Any other stuff anyone reccomends or secret would be appreciated. Any kinda cheap or easy mods?

I would accomplish those two FIRST... most any other mod performed will require changes in fuel, and MAY have some affect on BOTH performance and reliability.

Probably the next items to consider would be:

    -Reeds
    -Injectors (servicing/calibration).

Just make sure the injectors are coming from the same-style intake (Laser style or down-draft style... very important).

Havent done any of the mods yet but while I was out fishin yesteday I was runnin 5000ish rpms most of the day as I dont usually run wide open but for a second. While I was riding I heard a loud squeel start. I thought it was an overheat safety sound so I shut it off ASAP. I turned the key and it stayed squeeling, for about 30 seconds. I cranked the motor to see if it was peeing and it was and then the squeeling shut off. I usually watch my water psi and keep it around 15 psi. But I didnt look before I turned it off. While planning out again I noticed the psi was around 5-10 psi. I also noticed my speedo was stuck at 56mph. I was about to load up but I put it in reverse and romped on it a couple times in case there was debris, and went for a 2-3 minute ride again to see if that would help my pressure. It did it seemed to be fine around 15 psi again so I loaded it up. When I got home I looked at the speedo inlet and there was very soft wood shoved in it, I dug it out, took a couple times with i fine pic and then the pressure released and all seemed to be fine with the speedo as it went back to zero, and you could here pressure release. Now my question is do you think it was just trash and it overheated for a second, is there any filters I should look at for the water intake. It seemed to run fine after but I didnt push it, and I was just seein if I should be worried or its probably OK. Thanks

Just to clarify- was the "squealing" coming from your DASH, or from inside the engine cowling?

In either case... you're going to be wise to perform some checks/repairs BEFORE running the engine again, depending on your answer....

That would indeed be an overheat warning.... anytime you're chasing down cooling system problems, ALWAYS- ALWAYS start at the SOURCE: The Water Pump.

Obtain a Part# 96148A8 or 96148T8 water pump kit, and install it with ALL NEW GASKETS (especially the ones below the impeller plate, and below the water pump base).

After completion- make sure you NEVER, EVER spin the engine over unless water is supplied to it (even for a split second).

Also I know your suggestion is the water pump, but would it be totally wrong to take it out again and try it due to it acting fine afterwardand the psi being back up to 15 or 20, and the woody stuff being lodged in the speedo hole. Im tryin to possibly buy another house and money is a little tight right now. If you say its a have to thing then I will save for it. I know cautious is best, but I still wanna fish. Thanks Don

A8 comes in a cardboard box, T8 comes on a plastic card.

Your call on the water pump, but IMHO... it's pretty cheap insurance.
