Results are in..........You be the judge

well...............for my own little experiment anyway.

OK.......I was REALLY curious at WHAT difference is really made between all the grades of Gasoline......87, 89(E-10) and 91 around here.........one thing I can tell you around town.....not much............but towning a boat is another story.

OK.......it has taken me a couple months to do this but I have some very Similar comparison's now!!!!

in June I went to Burchard towing my boat Using 89(E-10) and I got around 12.2 mpg with it both down and back.....Full tank of gas to start out(in truck) & nothin more added/taken away in my boat either......its about a 200 mile round trip with some hills and few flat spots that work out well.........as long as you dont set the Cruise & "Help" the truck up/down hills it does a little better but I did this all three times.........then I went to 87 about 2 weeks later..........now with 91 and air temps/conditions about the same as it was in June I have some good comarisons.

    87..............12.74
    89(E-10).....12.23
    91..............13.85

    You be the judge?

Does running premuim pay for itself even with a $.20 differnce over reg 87??

E10 saves you another $.10 over 87 but is it really worth it to save .5 mpg???

Re: Results are in..........You be the judge (dukhntr)

you posted that in the truck forum too if I remember............you got told NOT to run Premium too

Oh-Well............let em do what they want......However. I will tell you to make sure you run a can of Fuel Cleaner throught he truck a couple times a year if you do.......higher octane can cause more carbon build up but can be hlped with a good Fi cleaner.......but that should be done no matter WHAT type gasoline your running

add it up Mike..............dont look at the price at the pump......look at the $$ differnce during a fill up.

Example.............truck getting 12.2mpg with a 200 mile round trip uses 16.4 gallons. Truck doing the SAME trip with premium gets 1.5mpg better you fill up with 14.5 gallons.

now take the price differnce in the gas oer gallon and take it into consideration with having to Fill up.................Where are ya at?

    I believe it

I've done that test a few times when towing the boat long distances (Arkansas or Texas), and every time, my MPG increased, generally by no more than 1-1.5 MPG but that certainly pays for itself when I was only geting 11 MPG to begin with.

Assuming regular unleaded gas cost $3.75, and you were getting 11MPG, then put in Premium to increase MPG to 12MPG, the break even point is an extra 34 cents per gallon, so as long as Premium didn't cost more than $4.09 your getting a better deal

Based on a 200 mile trip the break-down is such for 87 octane and E-10(assumption is that the average for 87 octane is $3.80 and E-10 is .10 cents lower at $3.70):
200 miles divided by 12.74 MPG for 87 octane equals 15.70 gallons burned at 3.80 per gallon=$59.66
200 miles divided by 12.23 MPG for E-10 equals 16.35 gallons burned at 3.70 per gallon=$60.50
Only a dollar difference and that is based on traveling 200 miles. The premium is definetely worth it.
200 Miles divided by 13.85 MPG for 91 octane equals 14.44 gallons burned at 4.00 per gallon=$57.76 The benefits, not just the better mileage, is worth it in my opinion.

I drive my cummins and pulling just my boat i get around 18 to 19 mpg depending how i drive, and thats running at 70+ mph when i dont have my boat i run around 21-22 if i keep my foot out of it. hard to do with the straight pipe just sounds cool now when i hook my camper and boat gross weight is around 19,000 lbs i drop to about 12-13 mpg running 70 mph

Tow rig 93 dodge 250 with cummins auto, 2x4 and cold a/c

Real trucks dont have spark plugs, Dodge makes it Cummins shakes it
