    Excess movement

I noticed the other day that there was alot of side to side movement in my motor.
This clamp was loose and backed off. I ran it out to the end were it took the movement out. Was this the right thing to do? Here is the pic of the clamp.

    Thanks for any input.

That would be correct. This "thumb wheel" is intended to take up any slack, and is then locked in place (by clamp method) utilizing the screw that goes through the thumb-wheel.

Should be checked periodically... at least once annually.

Get the whole thing checked out. Mine did it this spring and there were a couple other thign loose that had to do with the steering. Not to metion the steering bolt was worn and needed replaced. Mine was so bad the boat was a bear to drive.

    Re: Excess movement (pijman)

Thanks, Larry- that's a VERY good point.

To clarify- at least once annually (if not more often)- ALL steering fastners, bushings, links, engine mounting bolts, jackplates, setback plates, and other attaching hardware should be inspected, and fastners should be checked for proper torque. This is often overlooked- despite the fact that it is a "Safety Issue"!
