I believe I'd check the lower unit fluid for discoloration and chunks of metal.
May be idling too fast. Check your adjustments. Also it will not go into reverse if the spark advance plate is moved too far.
Be sure to check the shear pin holes in the propshaft and the propeller. If they are oblong or worn oversize, the looseness can cause the drive pins to bend or break if shifted at a too high an rpm.
