Leakdown Test & other motor question

    I have a 1988 Johnson GT150model # J1150STLCCA which I am selling together with 1989 Fiberglass tracker 1800tf.

    Two questions.

    1. The guy that is interested in buying it want me to have a leakdown test done and wants results showing nothing lower that 26 and an avaerage of 22. Does that sound reasonable for that year motor?

    2. I have the VRO disconnected as that is what I was told is best for that older model. IS that a negative in your mind?

    Thanks for the help.

Re: Leakdown Test & other motor question (austinbassin)

Leak down tests are great if done properly. Motor should be at operating temp, best to use a two gauge tester. If he is talking % you should be OK, if the motor runs good. I looked for less than 15% leakdown, some say 10 to 12% but I found that depends upon the guage. Just like compression tests the cylinders should be even or close to it. Now as for the VRO, if it has been replaced in the 90's, or later I would hook it back up. If it is original I might leave it unhooked, if that would be OK with the buyer. I am not in favor of unhooking the VRO.

If you are going to do a leak down test have it done by a trained tech. It can be a very dangerous process. You are injecting over 100 PSI of air into the cylinder and using a breaker bar to raise and lower the piston in the cylinder. One slip of the hand and you'll have a 1/2" breaker bar swinging around like a fan blade.

If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

Got everything checked today and all is well. No more than 15% on any cylinder and basically zero runout on the prop shaft.

Letting the new owner decide on the VRO.

While in the engine area I spotted this wire and saw how it is brittle and corroded. Will replace for sure just wanted a little info on what it is. Looks to me like main power??? Its a Johnson GT150 1988.

Thanks for all the help. This board is the best. Hope I can be as helpfull to some.

I know epoxy floors (used to own a garage makeover company) and now know a little about doing boat carpet.

    Thanks Fred

    That would be NFG.

Re: Leakdown Test & other motor question (ChampioNman)

Any guess as to why it looks like it does, old and brittle. Just old, got hot? sumberged at some point in life? This is a replacement motor I put on my old boat a few years ago. Has always run ok but this little find might be a good catch to stop any future issues for sure. Is this an item I can find at pretty much any boat shop? It looks like it runs into the main wiring harness. I will just chase it back and try and get to some good wire.
    thanks

Being an 88, I'd be prone to say age...Otherwise it's a good looking engine...

With that corroded wire on the motor, that means that every inch of 12 volt postitive wire and their terminals should be inspected carefully.

    On another note:

Please resize your picture images to 800 by 600 pixels. Photobucket has the software to do that.

Your oversize images disrupt the the page formatting.

    Thanks.
