    Tilt cylinder leak

97 Ficht Intruder 150 (yep, it's still kickin)

Mechanics, need some of your valuable advice. I have a quote from a local mechainc to replace the wipers/seals in the tilt cylinders for 400 bucks. I saw Championman's special tool quote of 175 bucks, so I'm thinking this may be reasonable. I have no problem paying this guy for the work, but I also shop around and have nobody else in the area to ask to make sure the price is fair. I wouldn't mind doing it myself but don't have a service manual and don't have the confidence. Your thoughts are appreciated.

    Thanks

You use a spanner wrench on the tilt ram. That is due to the Eye for the roll pin at the top of the mid. The best way to do the fix on that is to tilt all the way up, deploy the trailer bracket and then remove the pin on top. You need to remove the circlips that keep the pin secure. Drive it out, then trim the motor down to free the tilt ram from the mid. Disconnect the tilt motor harness at the motor and remove the spade connectors from the plug. Feed the cable down through the motor bracket. Remove the bottom pin that keeps the TNT in place and the whole shebang comes right out. Place it in a vice, remove the seal/collar and the tilt ram and seal come out as a unit. Use a large wrench on the nut on the tilt ram to remove it then slide off the collar and seal. Replace the wiper and reverse the process.

Thanks for the info....you make it sound easy. Seeing the post by Frank makes me a bit cautious. Should I wimp out and decide to let somebody else do it......400 bucks seems a little steep now that you have explained the steps. This is a dealer quote, and I do realize they have set labor rates per hour. What say you?

    Re: Tilt cylinder leak (rednecktech)

IS IT THE SMALLER OUTSIDE CYLINDERS (WHICH ARE THE TRIM) OR YOUR CENTER LARGEST CYLINDER THAT IS LEAKING .THIS WOULD BE THE TILT CYLINDER ABIT MORE COMPLICATED BUT IF YOU CAN CHANGE SPARK PLUGS AND SERVICE YOU CAR YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THESE RESEAL PROVIDE YOU CAN GET THE CYLINDER CAPS & TRIM ROD PADS TO COME OFF....WHAT U GOT TO LOSE? friends here have got your back!!!!
but to answer yu question going rate for labor for reseal-not rebuild- in charlotte area is $180 plus parts =oring kit $65 & fluid....if it has to have one of the trim cylinder caps replaced their arond $158 each... Ihad one dealer and one private give these estimates recently.
I'll keep ya posted on how mine comes out .. I might be spending the weekend with Fred in acouple weeks if I cant handle it.....lol

Re: Tilt cylinder leak (Frank A)

Alrighty go to it last night,my trim cyl cap was really stuck used heavy duty Snap-on spanner wrench, and made extenion for its handle still would not break loose.Heated several times still no go. Then I decided it was coming off even if I had to buy a cap...got my long punch and big hammer -- heated housing again the slapped the heck of ot it couple time it moved then I use th wrench to remove it. After that thing were easy. Distorted the cap some but took a dremal tool to it and think its going to work out. My advise is get the proper to to remove cap or pay someone that has it to get those trim caps loose for you.
    Good luck!

If you are going to try it yourself, a shop manual is imperative. Follow the instructions on pulling the unit off the boat so you can work on it on the bench.

If you can't get the caps lose, take it to your nearest OMC/Bomb dealer. They have the right tools and can do it in 5 minutes. My dealer did it for me for free.

You can get a seal kit at shopevinrude.com.

Follow the directions in the manual. Its not hard but... there remains plenty of opportunity to mess it up.

Here's my adventure. ChampioNman walked me thru it. Lots of pics...
