    Engine removal

Ok, i'm replacing the steering cable on my Cajun. I can't get the cable out ofe th tube because there isn't enough room by the transom...not wide enough. So i guess i have the option of drilling a cable hole in the side of the transom area to remove and replace the cable of remove and hang the engine. Only problem is that i have never done that and don't know how heavy that SOB is or if i'm wasting my time by not taking it to a mechanic. I'd hate to have to do that consdeinrg i have already done 50% of the work. I have a 90hp v4 Rude. Any help would be appreciated. This is a 1992 Cajun in good condition.

    Thanks for any help!

You need a motor hoist and a lifting ring to safely remove the motor from the back of the boat, you can rent the hoist, a harmonic ballancer puller can also be rented.

If i rent a hoist where do i lift the engine from? Is there a hook or something on the motor? Then don't i have to re-seal where the clamps meet the boat? What do i use there? any info. would be great help! Also what is a lifting ring? Should the rental place have that?

there are threaded holes in the top of the flywheel---mount the puller to it with the proper bolts and start jacking up---take a little pressure off the transom and then loosen bolts to the transom

Here is what you need 3 5/16th X 24 thread X 3" long bolts, an eye bolt and nut, oversize washers on all bolts and eye ring. Harmonic balancer puller. flip the puller over so the flat side is facing up. then screw the bolts into the flywheel and hoist away. To re-seal the X-som use 4200 sealant. CM

Not yet but I can take some and post later today as I have a GT150 in the air right now. Pretty simple though just follow my instructions that I posted above and it will work just fine. You can get a harmonic balancer puller at any auto parts place for less than $15.00. It is a Y shape so the bolts fit right into the flywheel.

Have you checked the brand of steering system in your boat? Cajun used a lot of Detmar and they don't make that system anymore. In that case you will have to replace the whole system.

Is that a record around here for someone to dig up and hijack a 6 1/2 year old post instead of starting a new one?
