    MILK SHAKE IN LOWER UNIT

I just changed the lower unit oil in the new to me 1992 Johnson Fast Strike 150 horsepower and found the oil looked like a milk shake. Kind of disappointing and I refilled it with new oil and will deal with the problem in the spring. What beside seals could be the problem. I did put new plastic washers on the drain and upper screws but do not believe that the drain/fill or upper holes were the problem. Thanks in advance.

Did you replace drive shaft seals and orient them properly and add gasket seater to the seals and then replace the O ring on the RBC and seal it as well and then do the drive shaft seal and replace the O rings on the shinft rod housing? Then pressure/vacuum test?

    Yep! That might fix it.

Re: MILK SHAKE IN LOWER UNIT (316jughead)

I am happy about being able to change the lower unit oil. Not being very mechanical, I am not going to change the seals myself. I will take it out in the spring and check the lower unit oil after a couple of outings and see if the lower unit oil has water in it and then take it to our local marine dealer to repair the lower unit.

There are many locations that your leak could be coming from. Best thing to do is remove the case whenever you can and let your dealer do a pressure and vacuum test. This will pinpoint the leak and save you further aggrevation, not to mention a Quart of oil. If it gets below freezing where your boat is, I would suggest draining the contents of the case. This could save you a cracked housing.

I did drain the lower unit and will not be going in the water until spring. I will bring it into the dealer as suggested in the spring as well.

I would refill with oil. There could still be moisture in there to cause corrosion. Not to mention if you change your mind and decide to take it out and forget about it not having oil.
