Water pressure gage for 1990 Johnson GT175

I have a 1990 Champion 184DCR that dosn't have a water pressure gage for the GT175. It has trim, temp, tach, speed and depthfinder built into the dash. Everything I read on adjusting the height of the engine on the jack plate , says to watch the water pressure. I would like to install a water pressure gage and need to know if one can even be connected to the GT175. I would like to know if anyone has added a gage to their boat with this engine. Any information will be appreciated.

Not sure if your dash has the cutout, if not you'll need a 2 1/8" hole saw for the gauge. You can get a complete kit from one of the sponsors or BPS. The hose for the gauge gets T'd in off the tell tale hose on the back of the motor.

I dont have a hole that isnt filled and I dont see room to drill one. The Lorance depth finder and a row of circuit breakers are on the left side of the steering wheel and tach, speedometer, trim, fuel and temp gages take up the rest of the dash. The fish finder and a compass are mounted to the top of the consol. It looks like there is enough room that I could mount a bracket to the top of the consol and run a line threw the top of the consol to the pressure gage. It wont look as nice but I dont see another option. You can see my dash setup on my pictures on The Champion owners list. Is there any problem with this water pressure gage line freezeing in the winter and breaking ? I was also a little worried about haveing a water leak inside the engine cowiling.

I'd ditch the compass and install it there if the hole is appropriate. But I personally have never needed a compass on a bass boat. As for the lines freezing, yes I have seen them freeze, but it was only 2 isolated instances. All of my boats have had them and I never had one freeze.

The compass is mounted next to the fish finder on top of the consol. No hole.

You mentioned a temp gauge. Engine temp, or water temp? If it's a water temp (as in the lake water) then I'd ditch it in a minute to have a WP gauge.

A friend of mine melted a Merc a few years back because he caught a piece of plastic bag on the front of his lower unit. Water pressure gauges work ... over-heating horns sometimes don't. Sorry to rant on and on about this ... but I'm a firm believer that every boat should have a water pressure gauge.

Its an engine temp gage. There is a digital water temp gage on the bow with the sensor mounted to the trolling motor. I would like to keep the engine temp gage because like you said you cant count on the horn. I know I have to get this water pressure gage mounted some where and I think I am going to fab. a 3X3 box to the top of the consol and mount the gage there.

Hey fred why don't you post a pic of the dash and we'll try to help your decision.

I am going to remove the temp. gage and install the water pressure in its place. I think that the pressure gage is more important.
