Lower Unit - Pinhole Leak - UPDATE

    Hey guys,

Several of you were wanting to know what came of my pinhole leak in my lower unit.

Several people have looked at it, and many are still scratching their heads over it, myself included.

With no bigger than what the hole is, and given the shape of it, there really isn't any reason why some JB Weld won't cure it. Had it been a crack, I would be a little hesitant, but with the round shape and size of it, I think it's going to be fine.

Heck, it could be that the paint has been what's kept the hole plugged all these years anyways......

if the JB-weld dont cure it, bring it by and i will TIG weld it, shouldn't take more than 15 min's.

    No idea what so ever.

One thought is that it was damaged before by the previous owner, and patched from the inside. But looking at it I can't see any telltale sign, unless the repair was just that good.

    I'll keep that in mind.

I was told that welding was a no-no due to the heat and could damage the internal seals.

It could have just been a little porosity in the casting from when it was made.

I've been told that by a few other people. I've never heard of such a thing happening, but it certainly makes sense.

Welding it was going to be my suggestion and with the hole as little as it is it wouldnt take but a spot weld to fix it, grind it down lightly, repaint and lets go fishing.

the unit my partner had welded i was telling you about was welded up assembled,he did a place about 3 inches long and other than where he sanded the paint off it didn't even look like it got hot, where that is and the size i wouldn't wory about heat,we drained the oil and left out the vent plug and welded away.

let Tony tig weld it, it wont get hot enough to bother the seals!

It's poristiy! See it every day. (They produce about 15,000 cylinder blocks a day in the die cast machines under my office.) JB weld it and your good.

Oh, it's windy as a bag of A$$holes in the Keys, thats why I'm typing instead of fishing right now.

Not the same thing, but kinda close.

I had an engine that had a vacuum leak I couldn't find in the 80's. Someone suggested I paint my bare aluminum intake manifold and see if that helped. I didn't do it for a couple weeks because it looked so nice and shiny , but after I painted it (on the engine ) my leak, and idle problems were fixed.

POROSITY , It is a good thing to know about.
