So .... according to another thread, do you have a wave spearin' story to share?

Well, ya know how KY Lake is usually real calm in the morning and then the wind starts to blow and all hell breaks loose?
We launched in a tournament some time in 04' or 05' at 6am and the wind was out of the North at 35mph already. The Lake didn't get really bad until we were heading down the lbl side around fenton and the waves got worse and worse. We speared a few that were between 6 & 8 feet, seriously, not the 4 footers that some guys lie about, but real 8 footers. Ripped my windshield off, ripped my rod buckle off and all of my rods were in the floor(luckily), tore my trolling motor of the bracket(still cracked).
We turned around carefully, if we had done it slowly the boat would have been swamped from the side. It was already up to our knees in there.
We didn't win![]()
I don't know Mike...I would say you did win...you're alive to tell about it!![]()

Of course I talk to myself...sometimes I need expert advice.
Okay .... my story starts out just like Mike's. We spear one of those 6 or 8 footers and fill the boat full of water. It blew off a color GPS into the lake. The worst part is the fact that I spooked. ... When you are up to your azz in water, it's hard to remember that Forrest Wood promised you it would not sink. I, like a dummy, hit the throttle to try to get to shore. All it did with all that weight in it was stand on it's tail. When I did that, we took a couple more huge waves over the stern. This caused the motor cowl to fill with water and sucked the bottom 2 cylinders full of water and broke a rod in the motor. It seems that water does not compress too well !!!! So there we are in the middle of the lake with no power.
Cost the insurance company about 9K to fix. I still don't know how we took enough water over the bow to fill the boat, blow off my GPS and did NOT loose my hat or glasses!!
We went home safe and that is the main thing. I am told by the insurance company that the drowned motor thing is pretty commom on the Great Lakes. Been boating for 30+ years since I was 14 and that was my first and only accident.
By the way, did I mention that the boat was only 2 months old at the time and the destroyed motor only had about 20 hours on it??!!
Yup, that is worse. If you learned as much from that as I did from my experience, it is a good thing.
It was a real learning experience. I'm not sure, but I think my partner crapped his pants !!!!
By the way, my SOSpenders did not pop. Kinda makes me wonder cause you can imagine how wet they got.....just like you did I'm sure.
After telling that story, noone will take me up on my offer to go to Dale tomorrow!!! LOL
Great to hear you both are still with us. I had the same thing happen about 7 years ago, a good friend Jeff Coke had just got a new Ranger and let me drive it. Well the windy got up and we punched a good roller and filled the boat with water. I did not break anything, but it was about 28 degrees, and we had a long run to the ramp, WET. You talk about getting cold. You learn real fast how to run in them big rollers. Heading to dale hollow Friday & Sat., don't think it will be to rough there. Greg Paschal

Yeah but Mike is not telling you all why he was hell bent to make the run in that weather.......he was on fish....that were eating a lipless crankbait that had a hole through the middle of it.![]()
Buck
Wrong, I was on fish on jigs and tubes, my partner was throwing whatever he could get hung in some rocks, a lipless crankbait with a hole throught the middle just happened to be one of his baits.
We were on fish too >>> had 2 smallies in the livewell when it happened. We got towed to the ramp in Pigah Bay. Called and got the truck and trailer and we were allowed to weigh the fish!!
There is more than one boat on the bottom of these lakes because people tried to run the rollers and drowned their engines or broke their boat in half. I know that when I tell some of my clients about the size of some of the rollers I have been in down here they think I am stretching the truth but in fact it does happen. The worst rogue wave I ever climbed here, my 20 ft boat was climbing it and the bow was no where near the top yet and the stern was well above the trough. It was so bad it took us 4 hours to go from Blood River to Paris Landing...but we made it without getting wet but it was one hairy ride. Put in on the LBL side 3 times to rest for a while.
