    Computer guys help

My wife wants a laptop for Christmas. All she does is write books on her old onoe, but it is old. I basically need Word and wireless internet. Where do I go and what do I look for without getting ripped off for stuff she doesn't need?

Mike, I am VERY fond of Toshiba's. They make a lot of nice machines. We bought Megan one for graduation last year and it was $600 after rebates. It is an awesome machine with a built in modem so you can do wireless internet. It is an A105 model. The only thing I don't like about hers is it has XP Home instead of professional, but it has been fine for her.

Here is a link to one that best buys has that has the media XP and some other cool features. It is sold out, but you might find it in a store. It looks like a nice machine for not a lot of money. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ol...06799

I have a Dell now and like it fine. However, I have always felt that Toshiba was every bit as good as a Dell and usually has more bells and whistles for less money. You could go on-line and build one with Dell just to price it and compare. In my opinion you want wireless internal modem, 512 RAM would be plenty if all she is using it for is what you mentioned and a 40 gig hard drive. I also am fond of the Celeron Processors. They are fast, durable and less expensive then Pentiums. Nothing wrong with Pentiums....you will just pay more. I think you should be able to find one that will do way more than is needed for no more than $800. We can discuss if you want. I like researching this kind of stuff.

I have a dell and it is good for what I use it for. That Toshiba is exactly what I am looking for. If they have it in the store for that price it is sold. Thanks John.

The celeron is absolutely great for people who don't need a lot of processsing speed. So if she is just using word, email, excel, etc.. she will be fine.

For most people the celeron works great unless they work with a lot of programs open at the same time. The one thing I would suggest is get the most ram you can afford!! 1gig or more at least simply because XP requires at least 512 leaving you with only another 512 if you get 1 gig. I opt for 2gig minimum in all my machines.

Hey, I just got a Toshiba Satelite for my wife! Her stepmother went to bestbuy the day after Thanksgiving, and picked it up for $250.00! She decided that she liked her HP better, so she sold me the Toshiba. Can't beat that with a stick!
