I've heard a lot of talk about new designs, how do I tell which one I have?

Unless you have suffered damage or replaced it recently chances are pretty good you have an L2 case.

true, but to answer your question the L2 is more pointed, the M2 rounded/blunt, the M2 has low water pick-ups (holes at tip of nose cone), L2 doesn't.
first pic (blue LU) is the L2, second pic(white LU) M2

I've got an L2, which was changed on an insurance claim last fall. It looks the same as the old one. I asked about updated lower units and the dealer told me this is the newest one. Do they still make both? What are the differences/advantages?
Yes the L2 is still used on the 225 and 150 HO's but comes in a 1.86:1 flavor now opposed to the 1.71:1 ratio. The M2 is a much beefier case.
Beefier case? Meaning gears and all? And all new 250 HOs come with an M2?
