I am moving to a new location which will require backing somewhat uphill to the garage. I fear that the solenoid doesn't work nor have I ever heard it click in. If I am in a pinch and have a problem what can I do to keep the surge brakes from engaging? I have heard one can use a c-clamp to keep the roller pin from moving. This is a 03 trailer from Ranger.

If you don't want to fix the solenoid, UFP has a lock out cap that replaces the black plug on the top of your actuator. It is a metal cap that you manually turn just prior to backing. It is way better than the bracket that you slide in the side of the actuator. The lock out cap is like $13. I have one and fortunately, I have never had to use it. But, I've tested it and it works perfectly....
"A-60 & A-70 Lock Out Cap, replaces plastic outer member cap, mounts on outer member and is turned to lock out brakes when backing up. This is an optional item ans is handy when backing up inclines."
call me and I will mail you a manual lockout...
I found that using a locking pin for a hitch reciever works really well it doesn't fall out.
