trailer tire hub blew out and blew out the tire, Opinions?

My 2005 tandem marine master trailer back starboard side tire hub blew out the other day and then blew out the tire within seconds. Hub is ruined. Tire basically almost fell off and was just wobbling and dragging within seconds of the blow out. I was almost home and made it to my driveway. I am lucky it didnt catch on fire or melt my fiberglass on the trailer. It did rub on the inside of fiberglass a little and the inside rim of the tire rim is shredded.
How does this happen without warning? I thought the oil bath hubs were supposed to turn milky when they are low or something.

Can i fix this on my own with my limited mechanical knowledge? I am thinking i need new surge brakes, new spindle, hub, and obviously a new tire and rim. Any one see anything else from the pics?

    Suggestions?

Also does insurance normally cover this type of stuff? I have a $500.00 deductible. Will I be over $500 in repairs?

On a positive note we wacked some spotted bass on Lake Russell. The drive home was a little more than i bargained for. Not a great start to my Christmas Vacation.

Hey man not sure on the price of the repairs but id guess if a shop does it the cost will exceed 500 id turn it into your insurance ive had a few claims on mine (westmar) without a rate increase so it couldnt hurt

Looks like the spindle is shot, you may need a new axle, call Dennis at UFP 800-835-9211 ext.16..

Your new axle will come with the newer Vault hubs and the newer DB-35 disc brakes, and a 5 year warranty...
The axle may be around $500, you can install it with a little help from the guys you take fishin..lol..

new axle will be needed but the next thing will be get rid of those goody year marathon trailer tires...imo.....i use to use them all the time but then started blowing them out every 1000 miles or so switched to maxxis tires and no more probs i use 6ply tires lil overkill but they work great......

I can't remember but i think when it comes to the maintenance on these type of hubs, they require you to keep a eye on the hubs also. Just this year I changed the oil in mine , as part of the maintenance program, drove it for several months , retighined the plugs, from this point on i will keep a eye on the color of the oil to head off any problems. IMO the oil bath hubs is the way to go. My boat is 3yrs old , quite a bit of travel, not one problem and i have 4 hubs. Then your problem looks like something else anyway.

I had the same thing happen a fews years back. Had to make a hard stop and 1 of the calipers stuck. About 50 miles later I had the same mess. I replaced the entire axle. My trailer is a EZ Loader. I went through EZ Loader to get all the parts. Vault hubs were new then so I had the original style hubs put on the axle. Trailer was 4-5 years old then. Most of the shackles, bushings and bolts were showing signs of wear and I replaced them all while I had the axle out. Around $700 later I was back on the road.
