Do i have to wash it off every time?

Ok, this sounded a little odd to me but im gonna ask anyways. I just purchased a PT 170 TX and the trailer is painted black so know its not galvanized. This Easter weekend i was at my uncles house and my cousin asked me if the trailer was galvanized. I said no its painted steel. He told me to make a habit of washing off the trailer everytime i pulled it out of the water and brought it home. I know this is normal for saltwater but im 5 hours away from the coast so i know he was talking about the lake. Is this true or is he a dumb a%$?

Up here in Canada there are certain areas in which they ask us to wash down our boats and trailers but it is solely to stop the spread of invasive species / grasses from one waterway to another.

Yes and No. Not because of the salt water, but to get rid of oil residue and other crap at the ramp. It also gets rid of seaweed and invasive species (zebra mussels). In Ontario it is law to always wash your boat and trailer when going to a new lake or let it sit in the sun for 5 days.

If you have a hose and are able to give it a rinse, it would do no harm.

Depending on the year of your boat the trailer may be galvashield which is a process where paint is applied after a hot dip galavanizing. Tracker started using this process in late 2005. Take HIN number to nearby dealer and ask them to check for you. Rinsing never hurts but it is not necessary.

Same around here. There are a couple landings with a hose specifically for this purpose during the busy times of the year.

If he was asking if it was galvanized he was referring to salt/ brackish water. I have to rinse mine every time because of this. And i have a feeling the trailer will only last 5 years(if that)

I dont think you need to wash it off every time, but I will give a short example as to why its not bad to wash it every now and then just for the heck of it. I live in indiana, however, I have family in Florida. A friend bought a car, had been washed all the time. It was a ford mustang, looked perfect, however everything underneath was rusted and had to junk it eventually.

The guys down there told her some people who live along the coast dont ever get an undercarriage rinse.

Not that this would affect the boat, however there is a lot of salt in the air too depending on your area.

But coming out of fresh water? No, just salt water. But doesnt hurt to give the whole package a good rinse every now and then.

Or so my wife tells me.
