    Ranger light trouble

I have a 2006 Z21 Ranger... this weekend on the way to the lake I noticed that only one side of the trailer lights were working... both brake lights work...
also noted that the trailer plug was hot and partly melted the plug...

I have the trailer plugged into the 7 pin connection on the truck and have a 5 to 7 pin adapter in place.

Where do I start? Lights worked great day before.

I'd be worried that a fuse didn't blow in the tow vehicle if the line got hot enough to melt anything in the plug. If your vehicle has factory wiring, check the owners manual for the location and correct size for the fuse for the trailer marker/tail lights and verify that it is the right size. While you are in there, pull the fuse and make sure that the lights all go out so you know that your truck-side wiring is right.

Are the marker lights working on both sides, or are the marker and tail lights both out on one side?

If it's just the tail light, I'd assume it's the bulb. If all the lights (except the brake/turn) are out on one side, it's probably wiring.

    I'll check the fuse...

The marker lights only work on one side, all the lights work on that side, none of the lights work on the other... both brake lights work when you hit the brake.

Somewhere around the tongue, maybe even right at the connector, the brown wire will split with one wire going to each side. You'll need to follow the wire down the bad side looking for damage.
